Anyone know what is going on with Gawith Hoggarth & Co, their tobaccos are becoming increasing difficult to find. SP.com and P&C.com are basically sold out. Is this the new norm for all English made tobaccos?

Excellent question! I was wondering myself; I'm down to my last tin of American Delight and also Top Black Cherry that I use for mixing with other tobaccos. Done some internet research and the only thing I've found out is that many of their website links (inquiry links mostly) are gone...not deactivated, but literally removed from their site.

Good question... I don't remember ropes ever running out the first few years I was buying online. But, then that was just a few years. We can all guess and suppose, but really unless someone wants to write them and ask, we are just making stuff up. My guess... cats are getting caught up in their machinery. Every time they turn on a press or rope twirling machine or cutter, a cat gets stuck in it, and they have to spray the cat remains out and wash the equipment. All of my tobacco has cat hair in it, but then at my house cat hair is in everything.

I don't know, Cosmic's answer seems a little far-fetched. People always dramatize everything. It's actually that their cats just keep spraying the tobacco to mark their territory, and since the cats are basically family, they're not going anywhere.

I always thought Top Black Cherry had a little too much topping to smoke by itself...

Weren't we just talking about cat piss somewhere else yesterday? Things are getting strangely feline around here...

I buy it all. These retailers haven't set restrictions on purchases yet, so I buy every shipment. Just wait a year or two until I start reselling it.

crash, are your cats spraying on your stash as well? Because with what's going on at the facility that cosmic and george mentioned above, that's probably just a little too much cat piss for me...although you might be able to charge a premium to some smokers who like cat piss flavored pipe tobacco...

Germain's is the same thing. I wonder if these lulls in availability have something to do with their traditional production methods.

If I had any cats, I'd train them to pee on the plugs –the electrical plugs.

I with you @civilwar. G&H makes one of my favorites blends and it was traditionally always in stock. Alas, no more. And it is out at all the retailers for many months now.

This is why we stock up as much as we can, when we can. That being said it is odd that GH&Co. are all out of stock when it’s usually just their bigger brother Sam. Hmmm. I think it may be due to the histeria that occurred when McClelland closed their doors. People are buying up everything they can for the end of times.

While we are throwing out wild hypothesiseses... If I owned one of the worlds largest producers of pipe tobacco, with just under a fourth of sales going to one country, and that country started making laws telling them how to run their business... and trying to charge them fees, elaborate fees set up by their cigarette CEOs... would you be excited to continue selling to that country? Or, would you start finding ways to restructure or reinvent what you do?

That being said, are all of the shelves as empty in England as they are over here? I can't find a GH&co twist except in a few out of the way B&Ms. God, I sure hope England has as many empty shelves as we do.

A friend of mine who is addicted to GH Rum Flake ( to be called Jamaican Flake from now on) called Arango before Christmas and was told pretty much the same thing I was told when I called them back last spring: "We expect more. We have absolutely no reason not to expect more. We don't know exactly when."

I’m stocked up on all my favorites except for one, Westmoreland Slices, that stuff is the bees knees but they just don’t friggen distribute it over here... prolly think us yanks can’t handle it. For all who like Bracken Flake and sorely miss it, give WS a try. It’s not exactly the same but very similar.

I really like ordering from P&C but this always frustrates me. Seems like you have to go a page or two deep just to discover everything out of stock. Makes browsing products a PITA for sure.

I heard the G&H Westmoreland Slices was very similar to the old Irish Condor...any truth to that rumor?

I've only had Condor a couple times and it was late last summer in Scotland, so I'm not the best source, but here's what I do know. I was in Edinburgh at The Pipe Shop and asked about a pouch of Condor. The tobacconist told me that although he had Condor, it was for folks who were too lazy to go to a tobacconist. He recommended Gawith Hoggarths Westmorland Slices instead. I bought a small quantity from their bulk jars and wish I'd bought more. AFAIK, Westmorland Slices is not at all the same as the Samuel Gawith blend by a similar name. Sadly, Westmorland Slices are not exported to the USA. I just ordered some from Daniel Schneider at synjeco.ch, though, along with the hard-to-get FV and SJ Plugs. Westmorland Slices is not listed on the site yet, but they have it. The one problem is that they only accept American Express or wire transfer for payment from the USA. The cost was 12.50 CH (Swiss Francs) per 50g. The Swiss Franc is about on par with the USD right now, so it's the equivalent of about $12.50/tin.

Nukesimi, was that scented or unscented? I started with the unscented, but I found the scented to be stronger in nicotine, and slowly came to love the flavoring. But, I am not so sure I would have liked it, if it weren't from cutting my teeth on the unscented.

There are two possible explanations for the shortage in the US that come to mind. One is that the distributor isn't ordering enough, but I find that highly unlikely. If you sell a product that flies out the door as soon as it lands, you would almost certainly buy as much as you could. The second possibility, I think, is more likely. The Chinese market is booming, and they're willing to pay higher prices. If I had a market that I could sell to at a higher margin, I would send them as much as I could, but I would protect my home market first.

I cannot buy Rose Geranium Plug anywhere for love nor money. I find it impossible to believe that this has now become some new favorite with the Chinese. As an after thought I had a message through my 'All Things Cutty' blog from a Chines gentleman asking me if I would sell him some of my meerschaum pipe collection and the prices being banded around were astounding to me. Needless to say I politely declined his kind offer and suggested that he do as I do and spend hours wandering around flea markets.
