With the latest wiggle to the south. Florence is even more of a direct threat to the good folks at SPC. Wilmington is now in the crosshairs (although a storm of this size is more of shotgun than a rifle) and another slight tick to the south will bring Myrtle Beach into focus.
SPC and the entire Laudisi operation have been a tremendous boon to this pastime and industry. Even if you have never purchased a thing from them (and really, who hasn't) you owe them a debt for the way their passion for pipes, excellent stanards of service, and dedication to this market have raised the bar for the entire pipe world. (To say nothing of the historic Peterson deal.)
I have no association with SPC except as a tremendously satisfied customer, a happy visitor to Low Country Pipe & Cigar, and an almost-40-year pipe guy who appreciates what they have done for a pastime I love.
Prayers for everyone there.

It could be really bad for them. :crying:
It turns out they are in a low area, and the storm is expected to stall out "Houston style" and dump several FEET of rain.

One of the world's finest tobacco and pipe specialist, from some time now, most of my pipe acquisitions are from them and this tradition will continue further on,Yet I'm looking forward to a day when their European branch gots in full swing. Now it only remains to Hope for the best and that this hurricane would not alter negatively on them operations or staff. Blessings to them All,

I do hope for the best for everyone out there. As to SP, I have a vested interest since I (nearly) always buy all my tobacco from them.

As a new piper I've made 95% of my purchases of pipes and tobacco from SP. They've been great and customer service has been top notch. I pray they get through this well.
I've got a nephew in Anderson near Clemson U, but seems he's far enough inland to avoid anything too serious.
I pray this storm begins to turn and dissipate. Here's hoping.

I hope they've had time to pack all of the blends up in the rafters and high-tailed it out of there, with families and four-legged ones in tow. Some of the coastal evacuees have headed to Raleigh, where I am, so I hope they have been well-advised by the hurricane experts. Hoping for the best here.

Thanks guys! Your kindness and thoughts is heartwarming. Yeah, this isn't fun, but it'll be alright, we think.
Getting everything out of the buildings isn't practical. We're talking 54,000 sq ft of warehouse, manufacturing, office and retail space in the northeastern corner of Horry County, SC. So, we did the best we could do: cover pipes and get everything off the floor, even if it's by just a few inches.
However, it's not quite as bad as it looks on the map there. We're actually just outside of the 100 year flood zone (we're actually just a bit north of where the arrow points on Georged's map) and the building is set up slightly from the surrounding land. Matthew flooded within a quarter mile of the main building (which is the closest to the Waccamaw flood zone), but a quarter mile is a long way in this context. It probably sounds like I'm splitting hairs, but a couple of feet in elevation make a lot of difference in with river flood plains.
As for the people, those of us to the north and along the coast have evacuated inland for the most part. Most folks inland from the office (which is pretty far inland), who either live in and around Conway, SC or up towards Loris, SC or Tabor City, NC, are staying put. By the time the storm reaches them, it'll be unpleasant, but not so dangerous. Those along the SC coast--Little River, North Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach, etc--have mostly evacuated inland. I live in Wilmington, NC and my wife and I decided to evacuate our family (small child and old person included) and Brian Levine and his gracious wife Dale were kind enough to take us in.
So, that's everyone we know just now. We're about as prepared as we can be, both at work and personally. Right now, it's looking not that bad for all of us at Laudisi. It is likely to be disruptive, but we hope to have Smokingpipes back to normal Monday or Tuesday.

Best of luck to all down south. We endured Hurricane Hugo when I was a kid living in Charleston. Man that was a nasty one, but we made out ok. Stay safe everyone.

Sykes,
Prayers for your wellbeing and the wellbeing of all there. I have people in Wilmington and it looks like you made a good decision to move inland for the passage of the storm. I'm in south Florida, less than a quarter mile form the coast, and I agree with you entirely that even a small move makes a difference. Glad to hear you're at least a bit above that 100-year plain, as it seems likely this storm will challenge that.
See you on the other side of the storm.

swilford, thank you for the earlier report, and please keep us posted as things go along. SP is one of the great online retailers, THE great retailers in many categories, so we are all clenching our pipe stems in anticipation and concern. So many good memories of SP -- bringing a pipe to a pipe show for me to save me shipping, and so on. You folks are among the best.

A bit of positive news here I believe. I just got an email notifying me that my order that was placed Tuesday has just shipped.

Same. I figured now was a good time to give SPC a little business and get some revenue flowing. I placed a modest order of a couple pounds of bulk tobacco and a new pipe, and was pleased to see it's shipped.
