With high hopes I eagerly lit up my first bowl full... and all I taste is bubblegum! Anybody else experience this taste? I’m very disappointed. More so because this tobacco lights and burns like a goddamn champ right out of the tin, easiest plug I’ve ever worked with.

Bought two tins of it so far, but haven't gotten around to try it, mostly out of fear of its high nicotine content. Guess I'll give it a whirl in the next few days and see how bubblegummy it is—or not.

Bubblegum?! They're not going after the vape crowd, are they?

I’ve never been so put off by a tobacco that, on paper at least, I should adore. The new pipe I bought to smoke it out of turned out to be a big fat dud, I returned to smokingpipes without ever trying it, the construction was that bad. You win some, you lose some. Today I lost!

Olkofri I’m not really feeling the nicotine, BUT I used to smoke loads of cigarettes. And I pack pretty modest bowls, so your experience might differ entirely. The estate pipe I’m smoking out of was over reamed into bare wood and then some, I’ve not broken it in enough to get a good tasting smoke. I’ll try it out of a different pipe before I completely write this blend off.

War Horse Bar (Red) uses Valerian as the casing...while War Horse Plug (Green) uses heliotrope as the casing...personally I like the red better, but bubblegum? Not to my tastebuds.

    I don’t get bubblegum either.
I couldn’t figure out the green, heliotrope sounds right to me.

The red reminds me of Play-Doh. Apparently that’s what valerian smells like. Learn something every day.

No bubblegum taste when I smoke it.
It does seem to benefit from a few days in an occasionally opened jar.
I like the Red Much better than the Green, but the Green is not bad.

Huh, good to know on the casings! I’ll give it a few days and try it again, I want to love it but that first bowl was a struggle, I dumped a fair bit of it out.

I don’t like it at all. I don’t get bubble gum though, get Pay-Doh and Licorice. Tastes like a failed experiment to me.

The pipes I tried the War Horse blends in were institutionalized shortly after smoking.

Haha Embers that’s funny. I’ve honestly yet to have a tasty smoke out of this damn estate Peterson Spigot that was reamed half to death. Maybe it’s just the pipe... I usually like weird flavors. I should love this one. I’ll give it another shake before I draw battle lines and naysay this blend.

I taste licorice and like it quite a bit. It'll put hair on your chest, so a smallish chamber is best.

Warhorse ready rubbed is a lot milder in the casing. You might like that, but it’s a similar flavor I think. It’s been a while, seems the green didn’t seem so powerful after a few bowls and I got used to it. But there the jar sits while I’ve smoked the ready rubbed and opened another. Have a red in waiting.

Just a note - the heliotrope/valerian/licorice are not part of the casing. They're components of the top-dressing which is applied toward the end of manufacture. Casings are generally some kind of sugar-based product and applied in the early stages or processing.

Then I like the top-dressing on the ready rubbed quite a bit! Is the red considerable different from the Green?

The Green (other than the Valerian/Heliotrope difference) is topped more heavily that the red. The reason that both are so aromatic is that the base tobaccos include dark-fired Kentucky and dark air-cured leaf which would give it a flinty/earthy/peppery flavor without the top note.

Thx. Maybe it’s time to pop that tin of red. I was less of a fan of the green than of the ready rubbed (which I love). I was only holding back because I have rr and green already jarred!

The War Horse Bar was designed to replicate the original version by Gallagher's. We fed Jim Inks goodness knows how many original War Horse Bars from the 1960s through to the early 1980s iteration and he and Russ felt like they had nailed it. That being said I have a box of original War Horse Bars from the early 1970s and John nearly poisoned Les Trout with one the other week. The consensus was that they should be sold in dime bags like high grade weed! The War Horse Green was meant to resemble a well known UK OTC blend but somehow emerged from Russ's lab tasting very different from what was envisioned. Its one of those blends you either love or hate without any middle ground. I have found it makes an excellent substitute for moth balls!

The lab security cameras captured this on the day the final formula was being processed:

Lucky Les. Ha. I love my War Horse, Red, Green, then ready rubbed in preference order. I almost always have at least one of them open at any given time.

I'm still experimenting with the Red...thinking of trying it again soon.

But I'm afraid to try the green.

It’s worth trying both the Red and the Green. Not everyday smokes for me but enjoyable when the mood strikes.

There’s nothing else out there quite like these two. A big thanks to those who brought these blends to market! We’re truly fortunate to have choices like The Horses.

I always have a hard time telling whether the tobacco is just very strong or it’s the chemicals in the topping, but it the only tobacco I’ve had that made chunks of skin and hair just start falling off my head. My teeth always feel loose and squishy afterwards also.

Well, just tried it. You know what? It tastes bubblegummy to me too!

I don't mind it, though, I like bubblegum.

It was too moist, however. Had to be relighting after every couple of puffs. Now I have to try the Bar version.

Olkofri I hope my power of suggestion didn’t negatively influence your perception of the green stuff. But if you like bubblegum, then no harm done! I let mine dry and I still couldn’t keep it lit. As my new avatar suggests, I just got 3 more tobaccos that I’m much more excited to smoke. Might put the horse on the back burner for now and let it mellow out in the tin for a few days.

Like bubblegum flavored bubblegum, or as in something that could flavor a bubblegum? I don’t “get” the bubblegum flavors, but mine is from their first run. Could this be the new batch? I wouldn’t mind bubblegum flavors, but I’m not sure what you mean.

I totally appreciate what STG of Pennsylvania and Russ have done for the industry, Bengal Slices was a home run in my book, great stuff and very similar to the real BS I’ve tried, the main differences being the cut. The vintage BS was cut into small flakes whereas the new is a crumble cake but the taste is great and I’ll be buying that stuff up until it goes belly up (or I do). I think my main disappointment with WHG was that I was really hoping for a Condor replacement, something that would satiate my urge to spend all my hard earned dough on those tiny plugs in Ireland (when they were still being made there), I spent a small fortune stocking up on the plugs, LC and RR (totally worth it) but I was just unrealistically hoping for an identical or close to identical match. Well, they got the color of the tin right but that’s about it. I imagine copying something like Condor is near impossible, it’s a highly complex and very secretive recipe that’s been guardedly closely over many, many years. I love strong blends but the Warhorse Bars taste strong just for the sake of being strong, I don’t get any real complexities or subtle nuances in them, just strength and top dressing. It’s like food, I like my food to have some spice but there are some hot sauces on the market that are just ridiculously hot, they have no taste only strength. I imagine those hot sauces are made for macho men to conduct their pissing matches with their mates while slapping it on chicken wings and showing off how much they can eat or to win some silly free t-shirt, to impress their lady friends. Anyway, I’m a big fan of Russ & the Standard Group, I wish they had more legal room to pursue the dreams they’ve envisioned for the company but they are doing the best they can within boundaries of the law and the equipment that they have and I applaud their efforts. But they can’t please everyone with every release. I’m glad to see that Warhorse has its fans though.

This tin was from a few years ago, at least from AD 2016, methinks (no date on tin).

I would try it. I like it, it was bit a shock at first is all. And I don't really mean I didn't like it. The shell shock wore off after a bowl or two. I like it nearly as well now as the ready rubbed (which seems much more mainstream to me) and I'm only 1/2 way thru the first tin. I've retrieved my tin of red and will break it soon.
