Thanks! Went after the Kevin Arthur whale, but it jumped out of my range.

I picked up a nice Don Kayne pipe from Steve. I haven't seen one of these in decades.

Congratulations! Beautiful Wade! Great pipes!
My win today was this one:

Like I need another Barling, but I like this acorn shape.

@sablebrush52 Thank you! Saw that Barling as well, beautiful piece! Don't have any spigots in my collection, and debated that one as well, but being the sucker for a well crafted giant Danish freehand ruled my decision. Congrats on your win!

The Preben Holm made Wades are excellent pipes that represent great value for the buck.
I got lucky with the Barling. I had bid and lost in a previous auction and the buyer returned it for BS reasons. This time it went for about $120 less than last time, which is fine with me.

Even more congrats! Probably had that kid on Christmas morning thing going on at the last 5 seconds of the auction! Got an amazing deal on that Barling!

And thanks for the purchase, Duane. You better use both hands and your feet to hold the bowl on that Ben Wade. It's big!

Thank you for the business yesterday, Warren. That pipe came from a gentleman who actually worked with Kayne in his pipe shop in the 1980s, I believe. Really nice wood on that piece. Enjoy!

And a great pick-up, Jesse! There's just something magical to me about old Barling's Fossil pipes. I knew you liked that one and was rooting for you. Nothing like having a pipe go to an appreciative buyer. Thanks again!

I also saw that pipe but didn't bid on it. Congrats to you.
I was bidding on http://www.ebay.com/itm/391009642245?ssPageName=STRK:MEDWX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1435.l2649 Ed Burak. I just loved the shape, reminding me of a possibly more affordable S. Bang.
Oh, well.

Hi Allan,
Thanks! I got lucky on this go round.
That Burak was a sweet looking design! I wonder how that airway was drilled.
Thank YOU Steve! You're a pro and a gentleman. I appreciate that you keep it all honest and straightforward.

At the NYC pipe club meeting a few weeks ago, a member who frequently sells on ebay showed the group several collector Burak's, with a different name either along with Connoisseur, some specialty type or other. Can't remember.
In any case, there was only praise among the group about Burak and his design work. There is also an S Bang pipe on ebay selling now for $1500.00 with a similar shape. The photo is gorgeous, but not in my range.

@pipestud I know! Love how big the Wades are! First really big pipe was a Johs, and have been a sucker for large freehands ever since. Thanks again!

BTW, Duane, keep an eye out for the Preben Holm 2nd's, which are marked "Frasortoret", if you are not already aware of them. Often really big, beautiful blasted freehands that smoke exceptionally well. They have a few fills so they don't get to be firsts. They're terrific bargains as they don't sport a "star" name. They're just excellent pipes.
Allan, that Bang shape looks almost exactly like my Barling 1908 briar calabash:
1908_barling_briar_calabash_small-600x450.jpg

While I can afford to buy pipes in that range, I just can't bring myself to do it. The only exception being the unsmoked 1907 Barling set, and I broke the money boundary by a LOT with that one.
The Bang is a beautiful pipe. I was looking at buying them several years ago, but got put off by conversations with a couple of collectors who said that their Bang pipes were very uneven in terms of smoking properties.
I look at these great pipes and that voice comes into my head that says, "And it's really going to smoke better than pipes that you already have, which bring you pleasure, and which cost a tiny fraction of that price? And you really can't think of a better use for the money?"
sigh...

I was not aware of Preben's seconds, thanks for the heads up. Going to have to keep my eyes open for those!

It's here! Can't wait to get this guy cleaned up and smoke it. Actually one of the smaller pipes in my collection, but feels geat in my hand!
