I liked the suggestion of a topic of pipe or pipe related eBay wins. Pretty much PAD just for eBay wins.
Here is my most recent one. Cheap pipe I picked up for 20 bucks and thats including shipping. Its a Digby that is made by GBD. Pick up 2 off eBay and have been pleasantly surprised. I talked with the guy and got free shipping because I bought a few accessories he was selling too.

Well I tried about 30 times and can't get the eBay pics to pull up. I tried direct link and all but eBay are being copy write jerks lol. Once it comes in I'll pop up a picture.

I'm a complete newbie to eBay. I've looked for and found things in the past, but I've always gotten either my sister or my wife to do the actual bidding. Now I'm like the tiger: sitting in the reeds by the waterhole, waiting for that perfect combination of old and not too sick to take a little drink and lower it's guard...

I dipped my toe in the water and got a win! A few misses along the way, but that's the learning process. I picked up a couple of Dr. Grabows and a pipe rack/humidor that could use a little love for the grand total of $5 plus shipping. Arrived today and I'm looking forward to whipping the pipes and rack into shape. The rack is walnut with a glass humidor (jar), and I think it will end up looking nice. Unfortunately I'm going to be on the road for the week, so it will have to wait for my return.

@wallbright: It ended up well! The pipes were pretty disgusting when they showed up, and the stand/humidor was... old. The finish was just weathered. So I gave the pipes a reaming and a salt treatment, and I sanded down the rack and stained it and finished it.

Now the stand holds my pipes and a generous supply of 1Q, and the two pipes make the rotation when I want a smaller bowl. Actually, the Dr. Grabow 1/2 bent is a nice, lightweight pipe that's good for clenching when your hands are otherwise occupied, like this afternoon when I was working in the shop. Here's a picture of the rack with my pipes:

And the two Dr. Grabows are in this shot, at center and bottom.

Very nice grab Simon. I was looking at a similar find on ebay a few moments ago. It is a humidor/rack set with 6 pipes for $35 USD shipped with no bids. I don't have any spare money and couldn't really tell if the pipes were in good shape. Link is here for that one. Then I found a separate listing with 5 pipes with a rack and small humidor. Link is here for that one.
I just don't know enough about pipes and what they are worth or how to restore them to feel comfortable to bid on them. Hopefully they will make someone else happy.

That first one seems the better deal to me. It comes out to to be about 5 dollars a pipe with a free stand (that is how I would choose to see it), and even though they are all on the cheap side of pipe brands, they will be perfect for learning how to clean and restore estate pipes! The pipes look to be in fairly okay shape but the pictures are a little blurry...

Mason jars and bale top jars, mason jars and bale top jars.... that is all!

Only problem is I don't have an Ebay account or pay pal. So in the time it would take to set it up I don't think I could bid on it.

Wait it seems that I do have both. Do you think the pipes would be worth keeping once restored?

Lol I have been eying the second link for the last 4 days. Those are imo some pretty good pipes. I love the stand though. I think its worth it but I just don't want to drop 50 on it do to the fact I already have 2 of those exact pipes and not sure about the rest by the pics.

In my case, I wanted the rack. I was going to give restoring the pipes a try, but if I ruined them I didn't really care. I got a stand and humidor for $5. As it turned out, the restoration worked and the pipes ended up in my rotation.

If you want a sure thing, go to a tobacconist and choose a pipe that looks good, draws well, and feels good in the hand. eBay is a bit of a crap shoot.

That's a heck of a deal for $5. I guess I will keep on searching for those kinds of deals haha. BTW, is that $5 Canadian or USD?

    wallbright,

I buy a lot of pipes on ebay. For the most part, I avoid the big lots. Usually what you'll get is a dozen pipes that weren't that great when they were new and aren't really worth the time and effort to restore them. There ARE some good lot deals out there, but most are just the left-overs from an estate sale that aren't worth the seller's time to list individually. If you want to try your luck, concentrate on lots that have good pictures of all the pipes in the lot. Many of these lots will have stems that have been bitten through, so look particularly close in that area. If you open the listing you will see a box at the bottm edge of the picture, Click on this to bring up enlarged pictures in a new window. If you still can't see them well, there is a Zoom link in the bottom right corner that will enlarge the pictures even more. A $5 pipe isn't really a bargain if you have to spend $20 for a new stem.

Here's a link to all the current listings that are posted as a "lot". Out of 82 possibilities there are a few that show promise.

Thanks Kcvet67 I am fairly new to ebay and pipe buying in general so I really appreciate the tips. I am currently the high bidder on a lot and hopefully it won't be a money waster. However, I am beginning to wonder if it was a mistake to bid before having knowledge of what to look for. :/

I've had a lot of fun on ebay. I've bought a lot of really nice pipes. I've gotten a few GREAT deals at bargain prices, but I've also made my share of mistakes. As with pipe smoking, you need to develop patience. On an average day there are about 13,000 listings in the Pipes category. I normally concentrate on the listings that are in auction format and ignore the "Buy-it-Now" listings. At the top of the page there are 3 tabs, click the center one that says "Auctions only", this cuts the listings down to 3,000-4,000. On the right hand side you'll see a drop-down menu with the title "Sort by". The ebay default is "Best Match" which is totally useless. My preference is "ending soonest", but you can also sort by price or the number of bids. If you take the time to explore a little you'll get a feel for how things work. Above all, learn that there will be more pipes listed tomorrow, wait 'til you find a pipe that's right for you at a price you're comfortable with.

There are many of us that buy and restore old pipes. If you want to try and restore them, feel free to ask for help and advise. I average restoring about 700 a year, I sell a lot of them and I keep the ones i like, I have a huge collection. It's not that hard if you have a few basic tools and materials. I have brought back some that looked horrible to looking like new. I sometimes find that I have a real collectible on my hands. Lately I restored a Sasienni 8 dot from the 1800's that is a real collectors item, I paid $1.25 for it. You take your chances on lots, but one gold nugget can make it worthwhile.

I have a question about paypal. If I do not have funds in my account what is the fastest way to add funds? It is linked with my bank but that takes 3-5 days and the seller wants payment within 3 days. I am perplexed on what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Paypal should transfer the money from your bank right away, but if you're new to Paypal there may be a delay, I'm not sure. To be on the safe side, send a message to the seller and explain the situation to them. Normally, a seller will only get nervous if they don't hear from you for days and haven't gotten paid. The winning notification you get from ebay will have a hyperlink in blue that says "contact seller". Click on that link and you can send a message through ebay to the seller.

You can also link a credit card to your paypal account, but that may take a few days to verify. Ebay has improved the safeguards for buyers, but if you pay with a CC and something goes wrong, you can file a chargeback through the CC company.

Thanks Kcvet67 I was able to figure it out. I have had the account for four years so my bank account is authorized. So, I found out that the funds will just be withdrawn from there directly and I needn't worry. Thank you for your help.

To post E-Bay listings, bring up the item, right click the E-bay title at the top, hit "copy" in the drop down box, return here then hit "control v." It should work kike this:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/55-Minty-PETERSONS-Meerschaum-Estate-Pipe-/260656310027?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cb053a70b

To post pictures, save the picture to whatever hosting site you use ( I use Photobucket)and hover your pointer over the picture. You will get a drop down box. Left click IMG code, right click copy, return here and hit "control v" That will post the picture.

I've always been crazy but it's kept me from going insane.

It's still there, it's just buried. When the listing ends ebay throws in a bunch of links to other open listings so that you'll buy more. You just have to scroll down the page to see it. How long the pictures stay available is up to the seller, he can remove the pictures at any time. To save the pictures follow chuck's instructions above.

Resurrecting the thread! I won a set of three Brighams today on eBay. I like Brighams, and I've been looking for bent bulldogs. Not sure what to make of the third pipe.

Now the waiting begins. Have I bought garbage? I won't know until they arrive. I had great success with earlier eBay-won Brigham 484.

Simon, Brighams look nice! So do the Churchwardens in your previous pic.
