I have this thread posted on another forum also.
I need help with this Dunhill. The nomenclature is pretty well buffed but on the shank I can make out an R and Dunhill (over) London and on the palm side shank Made In England with a small 12 underlined (this is about half the size of the D in England) and beneath is the word PENDING in capital letters. There is a 2 by the bowl. It came with the metal inner tube you see in the photo which slides into the metal tenon.
I've never seen a Dunhill like this and any information would be appreciated.
Thanks.

What you have there is a Vernon Tenon Dunhill pipe. Some Googling around will tell you all you need to know.
"the "Vernon Tenon" or "Vernon Fitment" was invented by Vernon Dunhill, Alfred's Brother to facilitate removal of the bit while the pipe was still warm. This little gadget wasn't very popular and was discontinued in 1940."
and "The Vernon Dunhill fitting was introduced in 1931 and was continued up to WWII."

+1 on what skaukatt said, the 2 on the bowl is more than likely the group size, my favorite size for every day smoking, enjoy it.

A Vernon Fitment, date coded, the underlined 12, to 1932. The 2...don't know, but the pipes were not marked with the group size until 1951.

Hell has officially frozen over. A line of Dunhills that I actually like. Beautiful pieces!

Here's a link to a thread on my 1932 Dunhill Bruyere patent with the Vernon fitting:

That's quite a looker. I don't know how the stinger smokes, but I suspect pretty well. It's well preserved.

Beautiful pipe! The only thing I have to add is the 2 is probably part of the shape number. Mostly 2 digit numbers from that era. There is a dublin shape #42 and very likely the 4 was buffed off as you said the stamps are hardly legible.
