Hey gang, another question, I am looking for a dunhill in my Birth year, (1980), And it info I could find says Cumberland was introduced in 1980 (or 1979), but how the heck do you tell that it was 1980 specifically?
I know enough to know I don't know!~
Here is the link to a auction I was looking at....NOT MY AUCTION.

I cant read the number on that pix, using my phone. It should be a 4 digit shape number for a 1980 with a 2 digit year number beside that stamp (next to the Dunhill or Made In England) that number should be a 20 for 1980 (1960 + 20). You better ask the seller to confirm. Looks like a good pipe, not mint so the price will stay reasonable. The stem looks original.

The rim looks pretty charred on it, I would also ask what kind of shape it is in, i.e if the bowl has been over reamed or if their is spider webbing in the bowl. You need to be careful on a pipe like that. When a seller gives no description of the condition of the pipe, I am very leery and usually stay away. This guy obviously doesn't sell pipes so he may not even know the answers to your questions. There could be a burnout and he wouldn't know it.

Ya know we always chance stepping on the toes of the last member that commented, but I think this

is a good pipe. The miner use defects can be taken care of without to much trouble. I can't confirm

it's an '80 Dunhill, but it's a beauty. As of today, (Aug. 21) there are three days left in the auction.

I think this pipe will demand a good price.

Okay folks this is what the seller had to say regarding the numbers....
"There is a 5 digit number but very difficult to make out it begins with a 4 and ends with 1. there is also the number 20 after England."
So it might be a 80?!?

Ok, so you know it is a Group 4, that is a little small for my taste (typically Dunhills are smaller, I bet most are Group 4). I was wrong, five digit shape numbers started in 1978, so I think that is a 1980 pipe.
Here are some completed 1980 Dunhill auctions in various finishes, but should give you some perspective on what you might want to bid.

Good luck!
