The inside of my meer is smooth as a baby's bottom...and much drier. When I go to dump my ash, the tobac has no grip on the bowl and that beautifully bullet-shaped remainder of my tobac tumbles out of the bowl with the ash. Help!
Edit: Corrected capitalization in title per Rule #9, L.

I no longer have that issue, now that my meer has carbon on its walls...no measureable cake, just slight carbon buildup.

Ohhhh! That's what the spoon is for! Honestly, I have stopped using a pipe tool, as I prefer a minimalist approach, and tamp with my finger. I am sporting a nice index finger callus these days. Good to know though that the baccy will get a bit more traction as the pipe ages.(You are correct that it is quite new.)

Wait. So what is the difference between traction and cake?
It's been driving me mad trying to keep my meers as they "should" be!
No matter what I do, I can't keep them "smooth", should I not even be aiming for this?

Since the use of alcohol to clean a Meerschaum is frowned upon...

I use a cotton swab and saliva to maintain the bowl...

It won't stay white on the interior owing to the oils (I suppose)...

But, isn't that the point/reason for a Meerschaum coloring up?

As, for losing the tobacco when attempting to dump the ash...

Good tamping technique should eliminate the need to dump the ash too often.

A layer of ash is very helpful in maintaining the ember.

The ash that "needs" to be removed should adhere to the tamper. (IMHO)

When it does, simply wipe the tamper on a paper towel.

That's what I do anyway... I'm sure there are differing techniques and opinions.
