So had a question for all of you out there that restore/refurbish pipes. I have been putting leather dye on my pipes and then lighting it on fire. What I am finding is that I sometimes get uneven stains and occasionally even streaks on the briar after the light. And on occasion I have had cracks show up that were not there before. Wondering if I am doing it wrong or is it better to just let the stain dry on it's own without lighting it?

I'll be interested to see what others say. I always flame it, but never had any issues, at least that I'm aware of...

I’ve seen both done on YouTube, but looking forward to the responses before I try my hand at either method. Great question, and sorry to hear about your cracked briar..
