Hi guys,
I recently got a meer restored just to see if meer is something that I would like to own in bigger quantity in the future. So this pipe I am talking about has a fixed tenon on the pipe to which the stem is screwed. The issue is that the hole in it is quite narrow that even a tapered pipe cleaner's narrow end fits snugly in it making the draw extremely tight.
Can a mortise be drilled in the pipe after removing the screw-in tenon or is it an excercise in vain?

I'll post the pipe's picture with the stem unscrewed after I reach home today from work.
Cheers,

Chris

Yes you can drill on it for a mortise but you have to be extremely carefull as it is very fragile.

If you try tenon mortise, you will have to stick a drilled flock inside the shank, to absorb volume's variations of the tenon which doesn't react like the meerschaum towards heat.

I sent a meer out to have that done, the repair shop sent it back as they didn't feel the stummel was big enough to support drilling out. YMMV
