I want to try and drill some of my pipes with a narrow draft hole up to 4mm. Starting with one, to see how it goes. The question: is it enough to drill out the shank, or do I have to work on the stem also?

It will depend on the stem, how it's built, how the whole pipe is built... luckily, you can drill out the stummel, and smoke the pipe and see if things have improved. If not, you'll have to play with the stem too. Utmost care in re-drilling a stem, they occassional grenade, so there is some risk. If you just need to open a restricted point, the little zigzag saws that Vermont Freehand sells are handy.
