Did you know that in the infamous 1964 Surgeon General's Report that it says Pipe Smokers (that don't inhale, and who does?) actually LIVE LONGER THAN NON-SMOKERS!

Wow! How come we don't hear that on the news?

There are also more smokers in Japan than the U.S, yet less cases of lung cancer.

    What's going on here?

the comment about lung cancer rates in japan has more to do with there diet which is high in omega 3,lower in iron, here in the states we like to consume lots of red meat with lots of iron which increases oxidative stress big time, where as their diet is basically anti inflammatory is discourages the body from over reacting to every thing that goes into it.Our inflammatory diets are far deadlier than smoking and understanding basic knowledge of fat types would prove that to anyone....as for the higher rates here, ill tell you something so obvious no one wants to talk about. The nuclear bombs tested here remember?Yeah those. What makes anyone think those arent killing us now and increasing cancer and genetic mutations to the day?I read an article once that was saying that in the 40s when japanese men moved here the rates of lung cancer sky rocketed, odd thing was before they moved here they were fine....somethings fishy if you ask me.Sickness incorporated U.S.A

say no more say no more Nudge nudge now what i mean?

@joeyfats - I'm a firm believer diet plays probably the biggest role in your total health. You bring up meat, a big part of that is how the meat is actually raised.

Good article. Would be interesting though to consider the 500 some-odd synthetic additives in most cigarette tobacco....

@joeyfats: I'm with you on the diet but the nuclear I'm not too sure about. You do realize two nukes were dropped in the middle of two large Japanese cities, right? And that those cities have been rebuilt on top of themselves and that millions live right on top of where the bombs were dropped? I imagine they'd have quite a bit more problems than they have if nuclear testing far off in a desert in the past causes lung cancer all over the US still.

i agree 100% kevin.its all biology. i read an article on yahoo regarding people at or over the age of 100, and one of them had been a smoker for 90 years.shes 107 and as healthy as a 107 year old can be.and she smoked cigarettes, which we all know are much different then pipes

As long as I got a pipe full of baccy and a nose full of snuff, I'm a happy camper
