Hello everyone.
I've been combing the internet in a feeble attempt to teach myself about Dunhill pipes. I've aquired a couple of them so I'm interested in the years they were made, value, history and the like. I might as well be teaching myself a dead language. So far all the info I have been able to find has taught me that the stamping on Dunhill Pipes is shrouded in secrecy. Patent numbers, year numbers, underlined, raised, if it was sent to this country the stamping means something different but looks the same.... It goes on and on. I am very confused. Anyway, I am making my first attempt at posting a pic on this forum. Hopefully this works and one of you kind folks could demystify these pipes for me.
First,I have an Oom Paul. This thing is nice. Stamping reads:
59L F/T DUNHILL

ROOT BRIAR
On the other side of the shank is:
MADE IN (4)R

ENGLAND
All I have figured out is that it is good briar (root) and a big bowled pipe (4). All other nomenclature is making my brain hurt. Please help.

Those are the websites that were giving me migraines. I was able to figure out that the stamping "ROOT" began in 1930. On this one there is a number 5 after the word "ENGLAND".

Upon more careful inspection, the stamping says:
591 F/T DUNHILL

ROOT BRIAR
MADE IN (4)R

ENGLAND5
My eyes are not what they used to be but I'm pretty sure that is the exact stamping on the briar.

I apologize for the initial brief reply. The 591 is the shape number, with the 1 denoting the size of the inner tube (metal insert) used on the pipe I believe. F/T is for a fantail stem end. The 4 is the size, group 4, with the R again the finish Root, as seen below Dunhill. It's hard to see in your picture, but if the 5 is smaller than the D in England, the pipe was made in 1955, if the same size as the D, 1965. From the picture, the date code after the D, whatever the number, does look smaller...If it's a smsll 5 with an underline, 1955.

Dunhill made two style of Oom-Paul. Your 591 has a Peterson style sump drilling, so you'll need to remove the stem to give it regular cleaning. The other style (round bottom) will pass a cleaner. Root Briar pipes are coveted. Once you get the hang of it, Dunhill offers far more information about their stamping (nomenclature) than any other classic pipe maker. As long as the nomenclature is strong, there are no Dunhill secrets. Congratulations on that one, the 591 is a sought after shape.

Thank you gentlemen for all this great info. The no. 5 after ENGLAND is the same size as the D. So 1965 would be the year. I had to look at it through a magnifying glass because either the stamping is light or the pipe has been handled a lot. It may be worn. I cleaned up the pipe myself. This one wasn't in bad shape at all. I reamed, salted then hit the bowl with a retort. I also polished up the stem. I am very happy with the results. It holds the nostalgia of pipe smoking so nicely. Thank you again for the info and the congrats. I've been smoking a pipe for maybe two years now and have become so passionate about them. It's wonderful to find things out about pipes. The knowledge just ads more dimentions to the enjoyment of smoking and restoring them.

I'd like to see a few more pictures, if you don't mind.

And, welcome to the British Pipes section. We're a small but passionate group.

Last time I looked, there was an Oom-Paul Dunhill on smokingpipes.com estate pipes, which may give you a point of comparison on stamping and a sense of price appraisal. It was not inexpensive.

Wow, what a great and unexpected response from you gentlemen! Very nice. Thank you! Ssjones, I will get you some more pics of the Dunhill asap. A magnifier plus my specs is a necessity for stamping, especially on the estates that may have been polished or handled. Thank you beefeater33 for that new - to - me resource. At this point I need all the help I can get! Dmtmck, thank you for clarifying things for me. My understanding of Dunhill stamping is finally headed in the right direction. Flatticus, you're the man! Thank you! Let me work on those pics now.

Very nice!

In Photobucket, if you copy the "IMG" info and paste that directly into the reply box, your picture will be displayed. Don't use the IMG shortcut button in the "Reply" box (Photobucket does that for you).

They are good looking pipes. It's only the second Dunhill I've had. I haven't smoked it though. He still needs briar polishing before he's ready to go. Have you smoked yours yet mustanggt?

The Oom Paul is a nice pipe. I'm still doing some work on mine. How does yours smoke? I'm kind of afraid to smoke a pipe with such a deep bowl because of moisture. I would imagine that shape could be a nightmare trying to pass a pipe cleaner through it in the middle of a smoke.
