about a year ago i was listening to some of the oldies songs / bands that i grew up with - using youtube and spotify

( spotify is a great way to find stuff like that )
all of a sudden i recognized the same exact riff in two different songs from the 1970's

i know there has to be more of them out there but this is the first time i ever pinned one down
the first song is foghat - sara lee - 13 seconds into it - there is the 7 note riff

the second song is traffic - dear mr. fantasy - 11 seconds into it - there is the same exact 7 note riff
they are even the same notes - both of these are two of my favorites of all time

hey - i haven't heard of that one - i don't mind if we turn this into a search for obscure music from the past

i figured there wouldn't be many post with similar finds

one album that i bought in late '70 or early '80 ( can't remember ) that took me years to find on amazon
white witch - a spiritual greeting
http://www.amazon.com/Spiritual-Greeting-Remaster-White-Witch/dp/B00000JBGC/ref=pd_sim_sbs_m_1
by the way - around 1985 about when all the satanic crap music started - i sold all of my albums - stopped listening to secular music and stopped watching tv
got caught up with a radio shack color computer - the rest is history
yeah - i used to listen to black sabbath 8 track tapes when i was a teenager but i was young and stupid - i still like the old songs though
i went to the same high school as the lynyrd skynyrd vocalist and some of the other band members ( they were several years ahead of me though ) they are my favorite band
i did a search and didn't find it so i guess i will start a new topic

favorite song of all time

The I-IV-V chord progression has been so common to blues and rock that you're bound to find it, in one iteration or another, in most rock and roll songs.
One of the stranger "copycat" incidents I've heard is between Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4" and Green Day's "Brain Stew." Same chords, same progression yet, strangely enough, the Chicago riff is faster. The reason I find this a bit more odd than other similarly-written tunes is the progression is chromatic (half-step intervals; on a guitar, fret-to-fret). It isn't the most musical progression, but these bands make it work.

Star Wars Main Theme, Puccini's Interlude and March from Superman if you want 3 that share a riff. That one may not count since John Williams copied himself after he copied Puccini.

The Rolling Stones song "Bitch" and the KISS song "Deuce"
Gene Simmons took the main riff of the Stones song and played it backwards.

The horn flourish from 'Son of a Preacher Man' and Elvis' version of 'CC Rider'. As Cajunguy said, that ol' blues gets around!

Edlogic, was Leonard Skinner your gym teacher? If so was he as much of an asshole as the band members thought?
hmmm - i don't know but i don't think so - i only went to robert e lee high in 10th grade ( changed schools a lot )

that was in 1973 and i skipped school a lot back then - also instead of going to gym class we would hide behind the thick bamboo along the back fence of the school and smoke pot - the skynyrd band was just starting to be famous and we didn't know the story of the naming of the band then - i don't remember anything about the coach - i think he already left or retired and he started a realty firm leonard skinnerd realty - i remember seeing those signs everywhere ...

back then we would go just outside the school fence and spend our lunch money on a pint of milk and a pack of doughnuts or pecan twirls and a pack of winstons at the skinners dairy store - total about $ 1.25 - every last friday of the month the air raid sirens would go off at about noon as a test - i remember one time we skipped school and the bus driver ( old black guy - mr mckenzie ) let us stay on the bus and took us to his house and let us have a beer - we wired an 8 track tape player on the bus and ran wires and connected speakers - from then on we would listen to skynyrd and other stuff on the way back and forth to school etc . - the school back then did not have air conditioning and it had radiators for heating
hope that's enough history for you for now

oh yeah - the very first day that i ever skipped was in 10th grade and we all went to my house - about noon - my dad showed up - he took me back to school after a belt whooping - but i did it again and again until i finally got suspended for a week - during that week my dad made me scrub every inch of the house with a cleaning cloth during school hours -
the way i would get away with it was i would skip a day then the next day i would tell my mom that i didn't feel good and i needed a note to skip gym class - i would write the note for her - but i would write the note at the very bottom of the paper so that she would have to sign at the top of the writing - then i would tear off the gym class text and above her signature i would put the text for why i missed the entire previous day and give that to the teacher - it worked like a charm

uh - i still passed all my classes with ease
