I don't think Vulcanite were ever standard on most pipes, or at least not in my experience. I believe in the 50's some came with reed stems, sort of like Old Dominion cobs do now, but then the went to the softer plastic. Vulcanite only come with select pipes, as you've noted, so far as I know.

I like the Missouri Meerschaums, espesially the ones with the wood plug center. but the bits are the pits .. the standard bits really suck. I did however get me one of their fancy ones, made of acrylic.. The "Charles Towne Cobbler " corn cob pipe is very nice and I am very happy with it ,the bit is high quality , all smoothed down and well made.
