Had the week off from school, chores are all done...what to do? I decided to finally make a tamper. The antler is from an old spike buck. The bottom insert is the cartridge rim from the first deer I shot back in, well, a long time ago!
I made the tamper with a flat tamp, angled tamp, and pick. The slight curve you may notice in the pick, snugs it in place. A couple of hours work, some buffing, and here it is.

Enjoy

Thanks flintlock and misu. Hoping to give her a try this afternoon.
Flintlock, will the tip of the tine discolor much from the ashes/embers?

Nice tamper! Don't think I've seen one with the shell casing attached like that.
Anyone ever make a stem out of antler? My dad is wanting me to make one for him, its gonna stink I know that much.

Never made a stem from antler, have used it for an extension on the stem of a pipe I made.I would think the antler would get soft and soggy from saliva--kinda like wood does.

I just polished the flat end and eased the edges so it wouldn't scrape the bowl. Ash rubs off the tip fairly easily. Length is 3.75".
