I thought, (there I go again) that it would be fun to have a dedicated thread to posting up fishing stories/photos of the big ones (I've never caught anything big :()

I like to fly fish mostly for Bream/Bluegill with a lightweight 4 wt. outfit with poppers just to hear them smack the dickens out of the poppers. They fight really well for their size and are really mouth watering when cut into palm size fillet pieces.

Pictures with you fishing and puffing away get extra credit.

Funny you should mention Bluegill. A buddy and I just yesterday were talking about fishing trips we've taken recently, and were discussing the taste of our favorite fresh water fish.
We both love the flavor of Bluegill!! Along with Walleye and Crappie!

I only wish I had photos of my trophys.....if I ever catch one I'll have some taken!

i like bluegills and crappie too, but in the last few years i haven't been able to hook one that was a keeper. they are so small anymore, i don't know why.
it's the same way fishing on the outer banks of nc. its got bad and you can't catch the fish that i used to years ago.

I'm a blues and striper man myself, I hit the streams in search of brookies on occasion as well.

Hearing about Blues reminds me of when I was on the Outer Banks around 20 years ago. I was surf fishing with my uncle from Iowa and it was his first time saltwater fishing. Well he caught a 6lb Blue and proceeded to place his thumb in it's mouth and well the screaming that insued afterwards was priceless.
I myself mostly flyfish unless I am with my older daughter. Bluegill are fun on a Fly rod but I love Trout and Smallmouth when it comes to a fight.

Why does it seem that todays youth has added lead paintchips to their daily diet!?!

My favorite two types of fishing are:

Out of small boat tootling down the shallow, crystal-clear, rocky-bottomed White River in N.W Arkansas for Brown and Rainbow trout.

In the spring, plastic-worm fishing out of a tube on farm-ponds for Largemouth Bass up near the bank.

Great thread idea, my fav. fishing is bluegill, crappie and large mouth on a fly rod on area private ponds. I also enjoy a trip every once in a while to the mountians for trout. I will try to post some picks this spring of my outings.

I like to go over to louisiana and fish the delta for reds and black drum .

Just the other day, my next door neighbor emptied out some blue crab shells etc into the front of his boat shed, a few minutes later he asked me to come down and look, had a nice 60" Redfish in about a foot of water at low tide feeding on what was left, His Tail and dot on his tail stuck out of the water a few inches, it was right at dusk, and I couldn't get my camera on my iPhone to catch a picture of him, all we could get was a reflection of the water unless standing right over him. lol, my neighbor threw his bait net over the redfish, but when the water settled, he was long gone! The Bass are rampid at my dock, they love the brackish water there, But for me it's Red Snapper, Redfish, Trout and Flounder. If the Gas Prices would come back down a bit, I would have to venture back out in Blue Water for more Dolphin. After fishing the blue water for the dolphin and snapper, everything else seems like a day of fiddling around. I'll have to send some pictures when the weather warms up, I never said I was hardcore, lol just enjoy fishing immensely!

I enjoy fishing the cranberry marshes for pan fish. Or hitting the small ponds many farmers have around here.

One of the many hats I have to wear running our charter cruises in Alaska is that of fishing guide (also plumber, electrician, navigator, host, somalier, mechanic and others)

Here is a nice 25 pound King Salmon a guest from Florida pulled in last summer. I will refrain from putting up a halibut photos as those are just stupid big.

    We also set shrimp traps

Nice Yacht; nothing like 2 spots strait out of the water! Where in Alaska are you running out of? I spend a few weeks each year fishing in the northern Hecate (QCI), namely seeking the chinook and coho runs myself, but I also take my fair share of halibut, ling, and snapper, not to mention d'ness and 2 spots.

We run weeklong trips between Sitka and Juneau. We are not a meat boat though, just enough fish for Nancy to cook up and serve. Here is a 34" Yellow Eye...biggest one we ever caught and only two inches shy of a state record.

I love fishing, that's what I've been doing everyday for the past 2 weeks! Hobie you should come visit me and fish Black Water river I've been hooking some big Bream and some striped bass. I caught a hugh carp a few days ago. So far this year the biggest catch was a 6.5ft Alligator Gar.
If you would want we could go hit the Gulf for some Redfish, I haven't been doing much salt water though because of the oil spill. I'm gonna get Charlie some time this spring I hope. He's a Big Blue Cat, a few of us have hooked him I myself have about five times. He's broken everyone's rods every time. I even lost a heavy duty saltwater rod to him! He's got a head on him that's about 1.5 feet wide he's a real monster, who loves to steal fish off your stringers and your stringer to if it's not tied off well.

Gorgeous yellow-eye, my favourite of the snapper species for eating (although a nice china-cod is pretty darn tasty too!). It's been awhile since I've come across any large snapper in our waters; everything is a tad on the perchy side. Don't get me wrong, one can still find all the species off our coast, but they are not given time to grow. The bigguns are going the way of the green ling, I fear. We're starting to see the same thing with sole, it's kind of brutal when dover is larger than the rock and petrale your pulling up.

It's a nice brackish mix of freash ans salt water. There are plenty of species of sun fish in the river. Bluegills, shellcrackers, warmouths, longearand green to name a few I catch on the regular. It's fun to hit a bed of them and be suprized at the Hybreds and crosbreeds you can pull out. The turtles and baby gators can get on your nerves at times, stealing your bait or the fish you just hooked and haven't landed yet.

I'm a river catfish man. I don't have any pictures at the moment. Hopefully this weekend

I can only assume that bowfishing for gar and carp would also be allowed in this thread. no pictures of that either because the pc that had them crashed and burned last fall in a lightning storm.

Every spring around this time vast amounts of herring gather in the archipelago here and so it's become kind of a tradition for me and my father to go out and catch a bucket-full at least once every year. It's fun trying to beat each other in number of herrings caught at a time, which depending on how many hooks you use can be quite a lot (I think I got 6 at most with 8 or so hooks on the line, two got away before I could unhook them though).

I'd estimate we caught a hundred or so in an hour

I honestly havn't caught anything for about 2 years. Mostly I just go now for the relative silence and how relaxing it is. Usually go for Carp if bored, or fresh water trout when I'm hungry!

Now that's "fishing"..... but some times it can be hard to keep the buggers away from the bait.
    Anything else is "catching".

I've been hanging out at the Orvis shop this week(it's next door to the pipe shop), how convenient. Looks like I'm going to get back into it pretty soon.

the beauty of the fly rod in saltwater is that you catch most everything with a few clousers and surface bugs.
all i ever use is mostly 10wt and sometimes 8wt, sink tip or floater. youre best off with saltwater rods and reels. need a stiff action and a good sealed drag on a four to four and a half inch reel for obvious good reason.
big red can easily run you into your backing and a mid to large tarpon a real possibility of spooling ya.
300-400 30# dacron. on a fly rod braid can cut your hand off on a big fish versus a bad burn and maybe a little blood. save the braid for the spinning reels.
when i get out on the oklawaha catch bass with jim tinney trout flies. he makes an excellent fly line. have several of them and they throw with the best of them.
ok, i'm done ramblin, your turn.

when i downloaded windows 7 (nice, like 7 better than xp, just not well versed or practiced with it, yet) i let it totally re-do everything, thusly had to start all over getting set up. i had an option to save what i wanted to but decided to let the installation down load and make a clean puter. i only had one pic of a 48" river musky and its gone
am hoping the better half gets an assinement in a state where i can use the long rod for musky and pike. will drive up towing boat to join her. will use my salt water flies and sw 10wt and probably a sink tip and clousers. hopefully will get some pics up there where ever that may turn out to be.
anonymous, with the kayak pics looks like he is fishing mosquito lagoon with the space center in the back ground.
mosquito and indian river lagoon are "the" top choice fishing destinations and lots of guides around there that really know the where to's and how to's. most guides the tackle whether fly cast or spin..too many over slot size reds to be caught there. some of the finest inshore fishing in the state of florida.

since this popped into my mind rather than usually popping out, will say this and quit rampling on.
i know alot guys are intimidated by braid whether on spin or casting. also by tying on a leader. what i do to connect braid to mono is an overkill slim beauty. will use a short leader, at most a foot long, about 40 or 60lb florocarbon,(prefer orvis lines) loop knot the other end and loop whatever lb. floro i want and loop knot to lure.
if you havent heard of it, Fins makes braids and i love their wind tammer line, it works. florida most of the time is windy on the water, i mean windy. have tried my best to get loop knots (where it wraps around rod tips and can cause loop like knots in the reel spool. into, across and down wind.
what alot of new braid users dont realize it takes alot less effort to set the hook and can easily harm the fish. am a c&r fisherman(catch and release) and will revive a tired out fish before release. if i want to eat fish it will be either at a restaurant or somebody who knows how to cook it.
if you are ever down here you really need to fish them atleast just once. well worth it.
ok, done ramblin, your turn. usless i think of something else.

oh i forgot something, like that's a big surprise.
we have a member here, nathaniel, is a guide out of titusville. right on top of both lagoons. dont have to worry too much about sharks, maybe a sand shark or two and the ocassional lagoon lizard and black tip. black tips can be fun to catch on lite tackle, they usually run between 5-7'. lagoon lizards i dont know about. have caught one and wasnt all that impressed.
touch base with him and he can fill you in better than i. the few im's we had, good impression. would find it very hard to believe he didnt know his stuff. am sure you would have a good time fishing with him.

have been wanting a shamano saragosa 4000 series. much better for the abuse id like to put it through. to do that i need to unload two 6500 ss metal penn spinners. one has 400 yards, give or take of 20lb pwr pro.
the other 200 yards of 20lb momoi's hi catch mono. neither one fished.
just hope the saragosa doesnt fall into that never fished class.
    ok, ur turn.

Caught (and released) a couple of pikes yesterday:

That's not me on the picture, by the way, but it's my pike

    Nice fish Nemrod !
I made it down to Galveston Island for a few days last week. Fished the 61st Street Pier two different nights from about 9 pm to 5 am. Met some interesting folk, and caught 100 or more trout (specs and sandtrout) both nights. Wound up with about 30 good size sandtrout and 8 speckled trout from 15-23 inches, but only got pics of these 3 specs from the first night fishing.

    nice spec's lonestar.

is the 61 st pier new?
last time in galveston (40 years ago) the only pier i knew of was an old wood with a mcdonalds size restaurant that had the best burgers, and drank my share of lonestar and coors. only went there for burgers and brews.

ling (cobia) beer batter deep fried is the best fish to grace my lips.
hope some day you get hooked up with one. are a blast to catch, as are tarpon :worship:
    tight lines my friend!

Grouchy, that might have been the 61st St pier, no idea how long its been around. Its out on the end of one of the stone jetties that come off of the seawall, and theres a restaurant/bar on the second floor. I prefer the 1/4 mile long pier at 91st street, but it got wiped out by a hurricane a couple years ago, supposed to reopen next year.
I usually have some Ling in the freezer by this time of year, but I've been too broke to do any offshore fishing. I had a blast catching all those specs on light tackle, but nothing beats a 60# ling on 20#test

would love to hook into one with an 8wt. 10wt would be a little more managable.
with all the canes galveston gets am suprised that old wood peer is still there. sure has stood the test of time.

    LOL Hobie.
Grouchy, I dont know that theres much you could do to a 60lb ling on 8lb line. I imagine its about like the machine at Academy spooling line off a reel. About 45 seconds of watching line shoot off the reel followed by a sudden snap when it reaches the end
Maybe not, but damn a ling has got a whole lot of fight in him.
I caught a 40lber last year and we broke a wooden baseball bat over his head twice before he gave up.
