After years of deliberation I have finally decided on a shape for my birth year Dunhill. I have decided on a 1978 51021. Now just have to keep an eye out for one.

Best of luck finding that one! Unfortunately, my birth year produced very few pipes. There was a little conflict in Europe (and Far East) going on at the time. I'd be very happy with a birth year Barling, though, anyone? (1944)

I'm not sure how accurate my memory is, but I think I remember George Dibos saying that the 70's were a low period in Dunhill quality, so look carefully.

I think the late 1970s are known as the low water mark for Dunhill quality. As mcitinner1 says, be careful.

That's a classic shape for sure. I'm with jpm' having a birth date of 1946 when Dunhill had little briar. Fortunately I'm not longing for a Dunhill, but they are the great aspirational pipe.

Good luck on the 5108. They are near impossible to even find a modern one. I have been searching for the right shape 5108 to replace the ones I sold many years ago in a smooth finish?

Rumors regarding Dunhill pipes abound. I've actually heard that the quality of Dunhill pipes in the '60s and '70s were superb and then the brand's quality took a nosedive in the '80s and 90's and then improved again in the 2000s. I never know what to believe and what not to. (Sigh).

1950. Difficult year to find in a Dunhill. And also a difficult year to determine using their date code, I think. Is it a small "0" with underscore and pat. number? Or a large "0" with no underscore and pat number? The Loring Date book is not that clear to me on this...
Second best [pun intended], I did get a Pat. No. ::Parker from 1950, a small bent billiard.

Gawd the 70s was a low point in quality for most things...Cars, Home design, pipes....My birth year is 75 btw. Ha
