While gawking at several pipes online, I again came across a specific type of billiard, one which has a short tip but a longer stem. The tip is probably on the order of 2 inches or less. Does this particular type of pipe have a specialized name, and is there a special purpose in shortening the tip so much beyond cosmetics? I rather like this type of tip, and noticed Dunhill makes a couple of billiards with it.

Sounds like you are describing a Canadian or Lumberman, depending on the shape of the shank. Very popular shapes with the theory being that the longer the shank, or strummel, the cooler the smoke. Everybody needs at least 3.

I'm confused on nomenclature. I thought the stem was the Vulcanite/lucite/etc. piece and the shank was the extension from the bowl

that attaches to the stem. A Canadian has a long shank and a relatively short stem, by the terminology I know. Have I jumbled this?
