Here are my cobs, some as early as the 1900's and some rather new.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to post those pix for us.
Do you think the earlier cobs were better in any way, compared to what we can buy today?

I think today's cobs smoke as well as vintage cobs but the paper labeled ones don't seem to last as well as the wooden plugged ones and the stems are nowhere as good. When looking for vintage cobs I try to buy the least used and with the amber colored stem since history of smoking them shows they do last the longest stems today do not last as long they are soft. The Irwin Cobb cob (straight diamond shank) and the bent diamond shank Missouri Meerschaum get smoked daily and both are pretty old, the stem on the straight is a replacement from some basket case cobs I buy just for their stems making them donor cobs.

That's a nice collection you have there. They are always a great smoke and a good way for new pipe smokers to dip their toe in the water. I was guess that old cobs are hard to find? After all they are often used on building sites, out camping and other places where it would be easy to damage an expensive pipe.
Also - has the diameter of the stems got bigger over the years? What look like the oldest seem to have a much thinker shank and stem

I have a pile of both filtered and non filtered, straight & bent stems if you have the need for more donors. All are new and unused.

I don't like the stems, that's why I got a forever stem. It makes it look better, and it will last pretty much forever. Plus you can get them in basically any style.

I don't like them either, so I ended up getting about a dozen stems from the seller on ebay who sells cob stems. Contrary to semi-popular belief, the quality of those stems are nice.
fishnbanjo, I'll send you a PM of what I have left shortly. :)

Filtered stems on the left, non-filtered on the right. Bents are on the sides so you can see it, straights...are straight. 8)

I enjoy my cobs too and just salvaged one of them today hopefully. A couple months back I noticed that the bottom of my Country Gent was getting soft so I stopped smoking it and set it aside. I got sick of seeing it out of commission on the shelf, so I put a hardwood plug in the bottom of it today and tried a new (to me anyway) recipe of pipe mud for contouring the bottom. I took some ash from my charcoal grill and mixed it up with Everclear, it seems to have worked great so far and is drying fast. If it holds up I think I'll treat the pipe to a new Forever Stem. It was my first pipe so it'll be nice to keep around!
