As I have a huge dislike for the plastic stems that come on cobs, and am too cheap to buy a replacement I whipped up these for a couple of cobs I enjoy smoking. No filters!!!

If at first you don't succeed you are running about average.

i like the 1/8 bend if i'm correct on that.
what would make one cob better made than the next other than stems?

Missouri Meerschaum is the only cob I would even think about buying. The cheap Asian knockoffs are horrible. MM has a selection to suit about any taste in cobs. The only fault I find is the cheap plastic stems that just don't hold up for clenchers.

Here's a pic of those nasty knockoffs Uncle was talking about...these are only for decorations and jokes and not for smoking anything in them....

    Hi Unclearthur,
How much do you charge for your M&M Cob stems ? Some of us could use some replacements.
    Thanks - Rich

I can do the fancy ones for 15.00 mailed in the US. Not sure about Canada. Right now the plain blanks are more expensive. Go figure?

I've been looking for "estate" M-M pipes (some unsmoked!) on eBay. Like my first pipe (circa 1975) they used a good quality hard black plastic then, plus the stems and shanks were thicker/wider. The straight saddle bits were even swelled into a semi-fantail!

Why doesn't M-M get on the ball and make em like that anymore?

I think cost is the big factor. They do a fantastic job of holding down the prices and most folks are willing to deal with the cheap plastic bits.

You could give walker briar works competition with those stems. Nice work Arthur.

I recently acquired a vintage MM, unsmoked and unopened. The quality difference is amazing. Looks like an entirely different animal. The shank and stem are both much heftier than the current versions and it has a metal tenon like Dr Grabows. Also the finish on the bowl is very smooth, even, and refined. The current versions look as if they are dipped in goop, wiped off and shoved in a box.

Awesome thing is I only paid $10 for it:)

That's cool unclearthur. I called the company a while back to ask them if they made a different colored stem. They said orange is all they make. I too have a distaste for the orange stems.

I have one of the MM cherry woods, it's a nice little smoker, considering the price. Just have to take a file to the plastic mouthpiece, once in awhile.

I just shot a message over to you Uncle Arthur. I really like the stem on the bottom in the pic.

The only thing that I dont like about the plastic bits that MM uses is that without a filter, the draw is absolutely atrocious. As such, I usually reserve my Corn Cob for very strong blends or moist aromatics that tend to leave a gurgle in a pipe. As these blends usually smoke very wet and ghost a pipe, they are perfect for my cob and the filter not only improves the draw but sucks up the extra moisture.

At one time MM used vulcanite-at least in some of their pipes. This one has a vulcanite stem AND a vulcanite shank extension on the real cob shank, plus it's got a stinger.Never saw another like it. Came in a Ebay lot.

I might not be so snobby about not smoking cobs if they still made them like that.

Ace and Pawpaw, as a rule I dont sell out of my cob collection, and especially 60 year old unsmoked cob shanked pipes......BUT I'm in a selling mood today !
Same as Ejames pipe, 1950's era, cob shanked, vulcanite bit and a stinger, but a straight pipe and brand new condition - unsmoked.
Wont be cheap, but this is up for grabs if either of you wants let me know
