Greetings all.
After all the kindly offered information on my previous related post, I thought I would share with you the results of my amateur efforts in the clean up of my recent Charatan acquisitions. The rims were pretty badly blackened a caked up and I initially considered topping them slightly. I eventually decided against this in difference to their age, and the fact that I'm not into (not to mention capable of) the NOS look. I like old pipes to show their age with some patina.
It's wonderful what a bit of warm black coffee and patience can do and the grain that emerged on the rim of the DELUXE made it clear that it deserved it's higher grade. You can get an idea of their original condition as they appeared on the auction site in my previous post here:

I'm rather happy with the end results, since I got the pair for a shade under the equivalent of 40$:

The actual colour of the pipes is heavily influenced by you using an orange cloth for the background and makes them look orange.
Just a tip, it is usually better to photograph pipes against a neutral background then the true colours of the briar are shown more lifelike.

Jay.

Well done !!

Most Charatan pipes were not stained, a little recorder oil brings the grain back to life and gives it a nice new old stock patina .
The 47 (247) and bell dublin 33 are amongst my favorite Charatan shapes.
I own one obscure deluxe 90 ( dublin shape ) that looks more like a bell dublin and I'm pretty sure it was not topped.

For some reason the Deluxe grade is one of my favorite Charatan grades, a short life well lived.
Only the pipes mentioned for US export were accomodated with the florid L .
Too bad about the orange cloth.
