I picked up a Chacom Maya poker estate recently and in the first bowl I noticed it 1) holds a lot of tobacco!! and 2) smokes a little warm. Now most of my pipes are rustic or sandblasted so I have never come across a pipe that is as shiny as this Chacom and I have a sneaking suspicion that the bowl has some sort of varnish finish. I'm wondering if stripping the finish might help the pipe breath a little better? Thoughts?

Neil is on the right track. Cake her up a bit. If after about 30 smokes, she still runs hot, then reconsider your options. I don't really like varnished pipes, but just removing the finish may not solve the problem right away. Plus, you might not like the quality of briar under there.
