Carter Lyles writes the Tobacco Policies & Legislation column here at Pipes Magazine.

I accidentally found him when he wrote an article for his college newspaper speaking out against his school's all out tobacco ban. He is majoring in psychology and journalism, which to me is the perfect combination to write about the insanity of tobacco bans and taxes.

His first column debuted here in November 2010. He has been a cigarette smoker until recently.

He just quit cigarettes and took up pipe smoking.

He mentioned that he only has one pipe and very little tobacco and he is on a tight budget with dual majors, paying for his schooling himself while working a part-time job.

If anyone would like to donate any spare pipes or tobaccos that they are not using, I'm sure Carter would greatly appreciate it.

He doesn't know about this thread.

Sure! Why not! BTW Kevin did you ever get that Dunghill stem I sent just before ZI got busted up?

Arthur, I did receive it. Thank you for the generosity. It unfortunately doesn't fit the pipe as the tenon is too large a diameter. I emailed you, but I guess the email didn't go through.

If the tenon on the stem is too large any repairman can turn it down for you. Glad it arrived OK.

I can remember those days well myself and am fortunate enough that the sacrifice then has paid off now.... I enjoy reading his articles and am happy to help him out.

I am packaging up some Stokkebye Nougat and Park Lane Orient Express to get out today.....

Hmm.. I have an estate Chacom I picked up and cleaned. I don't feel it's perfectly restored since the stem is still a bit oxidized, but frankly, it's just sitting on the rack and I'm not really enthralled by it. I would consider sending it off to a "person in need".

    Here's the original eBay picture

How would I get it to him ?

EDIT: Missed the B#@&y address in the original post I'll ship it out when I get back home tomorrow.

It has made more good men, good husbands, kind masters, indulgent fathers, than any other blessed thing on this universal earth."

Do we know what kind of tobacco's he likes?

I have a nice wide selection and would be happy to share, but I would hate to send, say an aro, to find out he's not a fan of aromatics?!

Could we get him on the box pass list? And how is that doing, btw?

    Thanks for the responses guys!

I do not know what he likes, and he is probably still figuring it out.

Since he is a former cig smoker, he may appreciate VA, VAPers, Virginia / Burley, and he may even appreciate something with a nic kick.

    Thanks Kevin,

As one trying to kick the cig habit myself, I think Mr. Pease's Haddo's and the Barbary Coast might be a couple samples worth sending his way.

This guy's gonna come home one day and have like 50 suspicious packages sitting at his doorstep.

I think I can spare some 1Q ... two majors and working his way through school? He needs some charity, for certain.

I know what I need, smoke, I can't recall the last time I tasted it....Gandalf in the mines of Moria.

"we shall have to share pipes, as good friends must at a pinch'....'I keep a treasure or two near my skin, as precious as rings to me. Here's one: my old wooden pipe. And here's another an unused one...He held up a small pipe with a wide flattened bowl, and handed it to Gimli. 'Does that settle the score between us', said Merry. 'Most noble hobbit, it leaves me deep in your debt."

I am a Newby too. But just to this site. But I will send him some home blended backy. I didn't realize he lives 45 mins from me. Is he affiliated with any pipe clubs? have him check out my club in Jacksonville and i will hand deliver to him if you guys would like...Jacksonville Smokers and Tokers. We can get him well aquainted with the awsome world of pipe smoking.

If you can't pack it, light it, and smoke it then why do it. It's a dieing art that must be rekindled in all of us as fortold by our forefathers.

Words to live by for all pipe smokers.
