Well I finally had my best smoke ever. I can't believe that this brand served me so well. Captain Black White was absolutely awesome.

After taking up pipe smoking again just this past thanksgiving after 8 years of cigar smoking this was the smoke that was my first " Ah-ha" moment and it was completely unexpected since this was the blend I first tried long ago and it killed my mouth and tongue.

I don't know what has changed but I tried it again with a new pouch from the local Rite Aid and was expecting a terrible smoke. Boy was I wrong.

This tobacco smoked almost on auto pilot for 45 mins straight. I only had to re- light it twice after that to try to get all the tobacco smoked down to the heel to help build my cake.

I have had about 10-15 bowls since my re introduction to pipe smoking and I have to say this was the one that was the best. Could my great grandfather been right?? This was the only blend he smoked.

I had this blend packed via the air gap method in my Peterson 301 pipe, which is my dedicated aromatic pipe and I was SO happy!!!  The charring light and the starting light were both perfect. No bite whatsoever. The room note was very pleasant and the taste was light and easy.

The many bowls before this one were english blends, some peretti cavendish and the highly recommended Dubhill Early Morning Pipe. Of course I smoked all those in my other pipes not dedicated to aromatics. I thought I was going to the English side as I liked the smoky flavor of the latikia so that was the route I was going.

But per everyone recommendation to not count Captain Black White out I figured why not. It didn't disappoint.  I liked the whole experience. No bite what so ever and the smoke and flavor to me were so pleasant. It was a really really nice gentle flavorful smoke without any fuss.

I will be smoking this again and perhaps getting more of this to be part of my regular rotation. I know I still am a new pipe smoker and I have a long way to go but this one was tops in my book so far.

Gosh,,, the fact that a readily available tobacco can be so good was so surprising. I can only wonder what else lies down the road for me! Recommendations please!!

I just last night put in an order for McCelland-Frog  Mortons,
G L Pease- Chelsea Morning, and of course the highly recommended 1Q. So I have those to look forward to.

But that damn Captian Black White was awesome. So my advice for the new pipe smoker do not count this one out by any means. Of course I may not know what I am taking about but for me this was the first perfect smoke I have had so far.

Great grandpa must have liked it for some reason, and now I know. Thanks Pepe!

Life is too short. Look up, be nice, and share your smoke with others who appreciate the same.

For OTC tobaccos I find Captain Black to be the best also. I am sure you will enjoy the 1Q also. You may want to give Captain Black Royal (blue pouch), it to is very good. Happy Puffing

I still love the Captain every so often, glad you had a good smoke with it! Definitely get yourself some 1Q to try.

When I first started smoking pipes, one of the first blends was Captain Black White. It wasn't great, wasn't horrible, so I kinda forgot about it. 2-3 months later, I opened the pouch back up and loaded a bowl. It was very pleasant. It's not my go to blend, but I like it for a change of pace every now and then. I sometimes smoke it when I go for a walk around the lake, just in case I run into other people.

Nothing else matters mate, except that it was perfect for you. If you have found a keeper in Cap. Black you are lucky because it is available everywhere. Makes life much easier

If at first you don't succeed, have another bowl.

If you like the white pouch, try Lane's RLP-6. It's like an improved Captain Black White!

Hey, its what I first started smoking. I liked it then and still like it now. The biggest reason I bought it was simply due to the fact it was the best I could find at the time and did not know there was other stuff out there. It remains a personal standard by which I judge other tabbacies.

I have a white pouch I have not opened. I am afraid it will have too much PG on it and ruin my mouth. I smoke 1Q every great now and then with no ill effects but really have to wonder if an OTC might be gooped with the stuff...anyone know how bad it is? If it won't work for me I will mail it to the OP just for a making great post

I haven't smoked CBW in over 30 years, but there was a time that was all I smoked and loved every bowl. Try letting it dry out a little, just enough so that it doesn't quite clump together and it shouldn't be so goopy and the bottom of the bowl.

Like others have already stated, when it comes to tobacco all that really matters is that you have found something you really enjoy.

As an example to others, and not that I care for moderation myself, it has always been my rule never to smoke when asleep, and never to refrain from smoking when awake.

Captain Black White is one of my goto blends when I am heading out to observe with the telescope. I stop by the drug store on the way out.

As JC says, let it dry a little:

Take a bowlful out, and let it dry on a piece of paper or a plate until a pinch between your thumb and forefinger doesn't clump together but falls back down in ribbons (this is called the "pinch test"). Keep in mind that with OTCs, it may take some time to reach the proper dryness due to the propylene glycol used to increase the tobacco's shelf life in the shop.

The Captain is one of my fav's. Give the blue pouch a try it's wonderful. I also recommend 1-Q and RLP-6. If you really like the black cavendish in the CBW, give Lanes BCA a try. There is a reason many of these OTC blends have been around so long, they are good.

This is the opposite experience i had when i started many moons ago.
I HATED the captain blacks i tried. Most likely i was puffing away like a maniac and just had a bad experience.
I wonder if i should go backwards to it all these years later.

I picked myself up a bag of CB Cherry and when I finally get the pipe going it is really good! It is the second baccy I have tried. I have a H&H sample set coming in soon and I look forward to trying them as well.

One thing about Captain Black -- it keeps *forever.*

I have a pound tin of Captain Black Royal -- with the old key-style lid -- that I bought in the PX in Germany in 1984 and it's still fresh and more than half full. Every once in a while, I'll fill a pipe with the stuff and yes, it does get better with age

I like the capt. also, and you can get it bulk form P&C for a very reasonable price, and just put it in a canning jar. I normally keep a few ounces on hand.

    I'm not complaining.

Ha, I once found a pouch of Captn that had to be seven or eight years old in one of my boxes of stuff. It was still fresh as a daisy.

Capt Black "gold" was the first pipe tobacco I ever smoked. In fact, I smoked it for years before I tried anything else. I would recommend trying the "royal" in the dark blue pouch. Lately, it has become my favorite of the Capt. Black blends. Always a solid smoke and easy to find, they are.
