There are no marks on the pipe, but I would think that the level of craftsmanship would be European and there is coat of arms stamped in gold on the inside of the case- twin griffins on both sides of a shield marked with initials. (Hard to read)

That's a very fine piece. Is there any faint lettering inside the case? And, European almost for sure. I am not aware of carvers outside of Europe, for the sake of clarity, I'll include Turkey and Greece as European.

You can see that it’s hard to make out details and the gold on white doesn’t have much contrast.

I’ll take another one and mess with the settings and see if I can generate a better image.

Looks like an intricate design/logo. Perhaps carefully lifting sections of it to flatten it a bit might help with visibility.

I found it in an antique shop on Grand Cayman and the clerk told me that the owner went to England to pick up antiques for resale.

I suspect it is European, though the ladies in fancy hats ("Gibson Girl" or "School Ma'am") were popular American carvings, too. Looks like the stem is intact-- you could send it to Walker's and have an acrylic stem made for everyday use. The coloring is one of those pre-color jobs, using vegetable dyes such as oxblood or dragon's blood.

Probably Austrian late 19th century if I was to hazard a guess. I agree with the pre-color statement. Vegetable die for the figurine part and ox blood for the shank would seem about right.

That seems odd... would they have used two colors like that?

She’s.been well smoked though, so I feel pretty certain that at least some of the coloring is honestly come.by.

One thing I see as special about her. Even though she is a petite pipe - meant for a woman, I believe - there is an amazing amount of accurate detail, such as the weave of her hat.

Yes, some intricate work. I see beauty in her.
Does her bonnet remove to reveal the chamber? And is the very dark blotch in the front just soot, or is there damage as well?

Amazingly, no damage, especially to those delicate ribbons. Where you see the soot is the pipe chamber and if you look at the first picture, you’ll see the tip of a pen that’ll give you an idea of the size of the chamber....

No, although I suppose you could. I would say that the construction is definitely meant as a pipe, though you could get a lot of smokes out of a minimal amount of tobacco! :puffy:

She’s got a long slender neck, too. They wouldn’t necessarily be short smokes...
