It's always difficult to be precise with dates for early Barlings, but based on the shaping, the logo, the orific bit, and the nomenclature printed on the base, I'd put the pipe in the early to mid 1920's. Being a YOW, it was a slightly higher grade of briar than the norm.

Thanks sablebrush52. I was also wondering whether this original mouthpiece is amber, amberoid or amberine or another type of synthetic amber. It looks quite like amber but I am no specialist. I also thought the case could supply some clues. I think the grain on this one is full and fine.

If it's the original stem I would expect it to be amber, but I can understand your point about the amberoid because of the appearance of marbling. Some, if not all of that should go away with a good cleaning out. I think this was a well loved pipe.

Yes doctorbob, that can be a drawback to this forum. Maybe a P.M. to sablebrush52 would have been more helpful.
I was tempted to buy it on a gut feeling as it is a U.K. only listing, but I may wait and see. A picture of the tenon etc could reveal more. If I had lots of money, I would have purchased it as I think the grain is special.
Looking at this pipe, I have some concerns. The kind of darkening of the bowl suggests to me that that the bowl was smoked hot. These old pipes look great but often have issues that one only finds out about when the dingus arrives. I believe it is a UK only listing as it doesn't show up on the US site.
Oh, it isn't a drawback, just an observation that someone is paying attention. I agree with Jesse that this would be a risky purchase. Especially at 200 pounds.

What I sometimes do with UK listings is wait 'til it doesn't sell and make an offer, after having asked loads of questions and seen more photos etc. I would have asked for a photo of the mouthpiece separated, the inside of the tobacco hole and so on........I adore cased pipes of that age especially Charatan and Barling.

I'm with you on that! Cased pipes are truly elegant. I have several old Barlings that are cased and I'd like to have several others fitted with cases. But it seems that no one can do that in todays world. It's not that cases aren't available, it's that cases fitted to the specific pipe aren't available. Every inquiry I've made has been fruitless. The only possibility suggested has been to ship the pipe to Turkey, somewhere, to have a case made like are made for meers, and that's not going to happen.
I'd love to see pictures of any cased pipes that you have.

Someone recently posted a pipe case made in a 3D printer, that was pretty amazing, I think it was this forum?
Because they know nothing about photography or how metering works.

When at Upshall I had one twin set made which is on the back page of that early brochure (1982). We also had only one seven day set made by Aspreys of New Bond Street London (by the craftsman there Mr Cahoots, a good friend of Paul Bentley from Astleys))and the silk lining had Aspreys by royal appointment Queen Elizabeth 11 (which I had asked for) with a James Upshall gold plaque in the centre of the case. Dunhill USA absolutely flipped out when they saw it because they had the 'by royal appointment for smoker's requisites' - so all hell broke loose at the RTDA convention of 1983. I wonder where that set is now?
I know that cases can now be made using a soft putty like material where the cling-filmed pipe is pressed in to form the mould and this is then covered with fabric when it hardens.
In the 1980s, They did say there is a way of 'liquid injected moulding' but it all seemed too expensive at the time. I remember that Charatan used a craftsman in the East end of London who carved each case to fit the pipes. Those days are over.
