"a citizen has the possibility to decide perhaps to enjoy a cigarette or a pipe or a cigar with their coffee"
Austria seems to be bucking the trend......

Just chiming in as the saying goes, recently I'was listening to a radio news were the reporter told that quite often he has been witnessing the smoking ban being overlooked in many Bars&Cafeterias especially in Germany and Greece, why they don't obey,

"a citizen has the possibility to decide perhaps to enjoy a cigarette or a pipe or a cigar with their coffee"
But is the Beeb really slipping in the grammar department??
Subjects has to agree with their verbs. :)

John, the Beeb has been slipping in every regard for many years now I'm ashamed to say. Once the paragon of news reporting.....alas 'tis no more.

Jay.

Perhaps you could forward this list of grammar gaffes, presented t.i.c.—unless you think they wouldn't get it!
Verbs HAS to agree with their subjects.

Never use a preposition to end a sentence with. Winston Churchill, corrected on this error once, responded to the young man who corrected him by saying "Young man, that is the kind of impudence up with which I will not put!

And don't start a sentence with a conjunction.

It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.

Avoid cliches like the plague. (They're old hat.)

Also, always avoid annoying alliteration.

Be more or less specific.

Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are (usually) unnecessary.

Also too, never, ever use repetitive redundancies endlessly over and over again.

No sentence fragments.

Contractions aren't always necessary and shouldn't be used to excess so don't.

Foreign words and phrases are not always apropos.

Do not be redundant; do not use more words than necessary; it's highly superfluous and can be excessive.

All generalizations are bad.

Comparisons are as bad as cliches.

Don't use no double negatives.

Avoid excessive use of ampersands & abbrevs., etc.

One-word sentences? Eliminate.

Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake (Unless they are as good as gold).

The passive voice is to be ignored.

Eliminate commas, that are, not necessary. Parenthetical words, however, should be enclosed in commas.

Never use a big word when substituting a diminutive one would suffice.

Don't overuse exclamation points!!!

Use words correctly, irregardless of how others use them.

Understatement is always the absolute best way to put forth earth-shaking ideas.

Use the apostrophe in it's proper place and omit it when its not needed and use it correctly with words' that show possession.

Don't use too many quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "I hate quotations.. Tell me what you know."

If you've heard it once, you've heard it a billion times: Resist hyperbole; not one writer in a million can use it correctly. Besides, hyperbole is always overdone, anyway.

Puns are for children, not groan readers.

Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.

Even IF a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.

Who needs rhetorical questions? However, what if there were no rhetorical questions?

Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.

Avoid "buzz-words"; such integrated transitional scenarios complicate simplistic matters.

People don't spell "a lot" correctly alot of the time.

Each person should use their possessive pronouns correctly.

All grammar and spelling rules have exceptions (with a few exceptions)....Morgan's Law.

Proofread carefully to see if you any words out.

The dash - a sometimes useful punctuation mark - can often be overused - even though it's a helpful tool some of the time.

Proofread carefully to make sure you don't repeat repeat any words.

In writing, it's important to remember that dangling sentences.

It's a funny read about the ban...while in my country the government going to waive the taxation on tobacco product sold in restaurant or coffee house yet planning to ban smoking even in the open air section, punishment is about USD2,000 fine or no more than 2 years jail...can you believe it? It is a pair of paradoxical comedy.
Thank god we got religious festival of animal sacrifice so vegans could never go mainstream in our country. We also got a religious festival where home brewed wine/beer is sacred so no regulations there. Now all we need is a religion or ethnic culture where tobacco smoking is sacred.

I sure am glad to see a little pushback on these draconian bans. If a business owner wants to allow smoking in his establishment, then by all means, it should be his decision. The "public health" issue is nonsense particularly when applied to pubs / bars. Nobody is forcing anyone to spend time in establishments that permit smoking.

Here's a ban I could enthusiastically support:

I think it's great that the Austrians are bucking the ban. I went to Vienna when I was 16 years old. It's a great city and the people are as nice as they come.

When the U.S. was struggling with smoking and health issues, with much friction and strife, the Europeans seemed to be smoking three cigarettes at a time, so it was sort of surprising how fast they came to the opposite position and banned smoking in Irish pubs and similar steps.

The unholy union of governments and transnational corporations has resulted in a continuity of agenda across much of the world...regarding many things.
This will eventually lead to perfect happiness...and effectiveness...for all.

Both my wives (I was a widower) and many of my friends were heavy smokers. I don't know if there is any generalization about why, but it's true.

Maybe many years ago it didn't matter if people smoked or not, but nowadays, with so many non-smokers being arrantly supercilious and priggish there's truth to that statement.

Well we had that here in the place where the eagle flys to the sun and where the eagle flies forever. But the founding fathers and it's people poo it that to rest a long time ago. Its only a matter of time before the machine eats its own children.
