I want to buy some bulk black cavendish for blending purposes, but only if it's unflavored. Sugar cased is fine, but I'd like to avoid any specific flavor. Is McClellend 600 flavored or no? Thanks for any responses.

Just look it up at our sponsor online retailers, and if you have doubts, give them a call for details. Cornell & Diehl has unflavored black Cavendish along with other blending tobaccos. There are several others as well, if you nose around the tobacco pages online.

Tobaccoreviews is the friend you need.

McClellend 600 does seem to fit the bill

There was the odd review on TR that referenced vanilla, which is why I asked here. I totally missed the C&D offering, so thanks for that

Depending on where you're located, 4noggins is a specialist shipping outside the U.S. I think.

I'm in Michigan (which is oddly blue-skied and 66 degrees on this February afternoon), so the usual suspects suffice.
I wanted to get an order in, so included some McClelland 5105 stoved Virginia in place of possibly flavored black Cav to bring some sweetness to what I have in mind. I'm trying to make a very oriental forward Virginia blend with 5100 as the backbone and the stoved hopefully providing some sweetness. I'm also considering adding a little bright Virginia to add some sharpness, but not too much. I want this heavy on the orientals, so that's why I was so concerned about avoiding any top desssing in the black cav, which was my first thought for a particularly sweet component. I don't think an oriental/vanilla blend sounds too tempting. I might make two prototypes, the second using a little perique in place of the bright. I'm looking forward to the experiment; I just bought new batteries for the kitchen scale and now just waiting in the delivery of the component tobaccos.

If you get around to it, C&D is probably the black cav you're looking for. If it has any vanilla, I can't detect it, and I've used it in my own VA, burley and Perique blends to good effect (i.e., no vanilla flavors clashing with the rest of it).
EDIT: There may be others out there, but this is one, at least, that will work.

Smoking some Haunted Bookshop right now with C&D black cavendish sprinkled in. Adds a nice, smokey sweetness and makes for a great change of pace.
Let us know how your blending works out for you.

For awhile, P&C was selling an unflavored black cavendish made by Lane, it was called toasted black cavendish. The description stated it was their BCA without the topping or flavoring. Was thinking about getting some, then it disappeared. Russ has some unflavored black cavendish in the blending section.
p.s. Russ, what happened to the TBC from Lane?

Green river black cavendish from 4Noggins is indeed quite nice. I recently added some Captain Morgan Black rum to some and it worked out nicely.

I just put together about a half ounce of the following blend: 4 parts 5100, 3 parts Turkish, 2 parts stoved Virginia, 1 part perique. I'm gonna leave it for a week or so before I give it a try. When I get some black cavendish I may simply add it to the same recipe or replace some of the stoved va depending on how the first blend tastes.

I have no patience, so 48 hours will have to do before my first taste.
It started a little flat, but the second half of the bowl was very good. However, it was not what I was going for at all, but at least I have a baseline. Surprisingly enough, the perique is front and center even at those proportions. It's more peppery than fruity, but drowning out the orientals just a bit. That being said, I'll make a couple ounces of that recipe, as it's a nice earthy vaper with, for my palate, a good amount of perique zippiness. Great tingle in the snork, no bite at all, and exceptionally cool.
I think in recipe 2 I'll eliminate the perique and add black cav and a little bright ribbon. I want to lighten it up so the orientals come through a little more, and just a bit more sweetness.
