I'm treating myself tomorrow at my favorite shop, and I'd really like to invest in a workhorse of a pipe. Something in the neighborhood of $75-115. Not a huge budget I know, but what style/brand should I keep in mind for a dependable smoker?
There will be pics of the new pipe, I promise ;)

Happy Birthday, Smitty.
Pipes I have and would recommend are:

Peterson

Stanwell

Savinelli

Design Berlin

I'm sure there are many other good pipes in your price range.

Thank you both for excellent suggestions. I did start the party early today by picking up a new bag of pipe cleaners and a couple MM Country Gentlemen :)
(and thanks for the HB's!)
I'm turning 21 and a new pipe sounds way better than a bottle of booze. Not saying there won't be any in my future

Happy Birthday! I LOVE my Savinelli Natural "workhorse" pipe. It had a HUGE fill that went all the way through the bowl right up near the top of the chamber, but after I broke it in, I'm not worried about it at all. It smokes everything great and was super cheap. I plan on getting another Savinelli in the same shape after the New Year.

Happy Birthday!

You might look into a Johs pipe as well.

For a hundred Samolians you can do very nicely.
Off topic: I just learned something....

The term Samolian came into the vernacular just before 1900.

A Samolian is slang for the American Dollar Bill.

A Napolian is a 20 franc French coin issued by Napoleon Bonaparte in the early 1800s.

A couple years ago, I told people I was now 21 times 2. One person, who only knew me by phone, said "You sound younger." "I am not young! I am just immature!"

Hope you have a great Birthday and end up with a wonderful new pipe. If I were in your position I would get a couple of MM Cobs for "work" pipes and spend the rest on a nice pipe to smoke when you get home!

Winton, Kevin and withnail, thank you guys! My 21st came and went safely. I spent the afternoon purchasing a real eye-catcher (pics soon), some FMOTT and Captain Cool. I then spent the evening with a different kind of eye-catcher, who isn't too fond of my pipe smell...YET! She's more than I could ask for so I suppose I can hold back when we're together. There's that forum-speak "SWMBO" for a reason, right? :) To conclude my birthday week I'll be snagging a couple of estate pieces.
Then...lots and lots of pipe porn pictures!
