Does anyone here have any experience with beech wood Stanwell pipes? How do they smoke compared to briar?

If I remember my history, Stanwell made beechwood pipes when briar was scarce during WWII. They have a commemorative set with a beechwood pipe currently available. I understand that beechwood smokes okay, but is not durable and will burn out.

Stanwell does indeed make a beechwood pipe, it is part of a celebratory set of some kind, I think to commemorate Stanwell's war time years, when briar was unavailable. As for the smoking qualities, I have no idea

I'm ever so tempted but can't find any info from anyone that has smoked one. Could use a pocket pipe or two and these would fit the bill nicely.

I've never smoked one, so I have no concrete info,

but here's a page with a little more and nice pix,

http://www.tecon-gmbh.de/product_info.php?products_id=5553

...part of the text sez:

"You may smoke both pipes, but smoking the beech wood pipe please be careful.

Beech wood burns more easily then briar. Don’t smoke it too hot."

The Danish Pipe Shop actually has a set on sale at the moment,

If you only want the beechwood, I can recommend William as an excellent seller,

for 30 euro at the bottom of this page,

I'd be highly interested to hear about your experience if you do end up getting one.

Here's a toast to all of the non-briar wood pipes including this beechwood, pear wood, rosewood,

Mountain Laurel, and others; and equally a toast to that ancient fellow or woman who must have found

briar roots leftover after a lightning ignited burn in a wooded area and decided this briar wood might

make a good tobacco pipe. It equalled or exceeded in various ways other woods, corn cobs and clay.

For which discovery of briar we are entirely grateful.
