Bearded stars: Backyard astronomers in the Northern Hemisphere get an eyeful this week, when four comets will be visible with binoculars or small telescopes in the early morning sky. These are comets ISON, Lovejoy, Encke, and Nevski.
Anyone following the news on these four comets?

I’ve been following the news on ISON for quite a while now. Waiting to see if it survives it’s encounter with the Sun tomorrow. If it does, it may put on quite a show in December.

Tonight ISON is directly behind the sun. We've lost visual contact. It is in its closest orbit around the sun, and the thought is that it may not make it around the sun. So all telescopes are trained to see if it appears on the far side of the sun. And if it does survive, whether it is still in one piece or whether it has broken up. Sometime in late December / January our planet will traverse the path of its tail, or what's left of it. And it should produce quite a show.

Well, I woke this morning to hear that the Sun-diving Comet ISON is still alive. That is, it survived its close encounter with our sun. Meaning when we pass through its tail in a month, it'll be full force on.
According to CNN, Comet ISON is "alive and brightening dramatically," based on an update on NASA's Comet ISON Observing Campaign website. The "somewhat upbeat" forecast came a day after it looked like the sun may have cooked the core, or nucleus, of the closely watched comet.

Hmm...Space Weather is reporting the probable demise of ISON. The plot thickens. Time will tell I guess.
They have a couple of great SOHO videos worth looking at:

My bad, Brian. You're right. Comet Ison was severely battered in its encounter with the Sun, and largely destroyed. Telescopes saw the giant ball of ice and dust disappear behind the star, but only a dull streamer re-emerge. So, it got toasted.

Wow...you were correct after all Kashmir. ISON LIVES! Quite surprising actually...its demise seemed certain yesterday. Somehow it has apparently survived the fiery furnace.

Well, it's touch and go. Remnants of the Comet Ison, did make it past the sun this morning. But the comet shrunk substantially in size, having been vaporized by our powerful star. Surviving aparently, but only just.

Alas, it does now appear that the portion of ISON that managed to emerge is not expected to hold together. A real shame...there were high expectations of it potentially being a brilliant, naked-eye comet in December had it remained more intact.
