Barclay Rex is closing their long standing store on 42nd street near Grand Central terminal. Their lease expired and they could not afford the prohibitive rent that the location brings. That leaves only Nat Sherman (primarily a cigar store) as the only B&M remaining in midtown Manhattan to buy pipes and tobacco. When I started smoking pipes in 1973 there were dozens. It seems we're a vanishing breed. They are not going out of business as they're opening a new store downtown on Pearl St in the Financial district
As a consolation though they are having a clearance sale. 30% of all pipes up to $300 and 40% on more expensive pipes. I used that as an excuse to buy a beautiful Castello KKKK poker and an equally gorgeous Ardor Mecurio author (similar but much more graceful than a Sav 320)

I worked there one summer in high school in the 1950s. It was called Petersons. Had a great time, learned a lot. Sorry to see it go. Between the NYC rents and the internet it is surprising that retail tobacconists still exist there.

The other post noted they are re-opening at a new location that consolidates this and another store. It's on the other thread. Most of NYC now has only neighborhood convenience store type tobacco sales that offer nails, cheap cigars, and the rare pouch of OTC pipe tobacco, but mostly no pipes or pipe tobacco. The crazy predatory rents are driving out residents in many neighborhoods where only hedge fund managers and their like, and various nationalities of foreign investors can afford to own property, most of whom don't live in the properties full time or at all. The vibrancy of many formerly exciting neighborhoods is evaporating.

Still, the loss of any store is worth noting, our beloved, iconic and sometimes historic landmarks are slowly loosing ground to PC and the internet :crying:
