At the moment the EU is poised to ban all flavoured cigarettes and to put shock pictures on all packs. It is being rumoured that Pipe tobacco and Cigar tobacco may fall into the same hole and that Aro's will be banned. It is not definite yet but it is definitely being spoken about... :(

This would be a huge hit to the blenders, who seem to offer (and therefore I presume sell) about three-to-one

(guesstimate) aros to unflavored blends. However, at least temporarily, it might launch unflavored English/etc.

blends to new heights. Of course, the whole trend threatens pipe smoking and will prompt higher pipe tobacco

taxing, etc. Overall, not a happy thought.

This one of a constantly growing number reasons why I can't fathom how anyone thought a continent-wide supergovernment was ever a good idea...

Well I guess if they outlaw aros, they can always protest by smoking some really smelly Englishes or Latakias or worse Mixture 79.

This has been a discussion in Canada as well. I do not understand what they consider flavouring though. In some form or another, there has been something added to virtually all tobaccos in the form of a casing. Does the ban only affect fruity in your face flavours, or will cavendish be on the list as well since it is usually made with a sugar solution of sorts?

well, as someone who has been living in an EU member country for 9 years now, this is the first i've heard of it. pipe-smoking is not experiencing the same massive hipster/college student resurgence here that it is back home in the states, so it's mostly ignored. it's seen as quaint and eccentric, when it's paid attention to at all, so i don't think the governments care enough yet. not enough pipe tobacco is sold here to make taxing worth it by a long shot.
if they do ban aromatics, however, you won't see me shed a tear. still, we can always do like my kentucky forefathers did with whiskey and just blend our own damn aromatics. it can't be THAT hard. we can make it a cottage industry and sell it on the black market! long live bootlegging!

Flavored cigs have been banned in the USA since 2009, thankfully we ain't got the horror show graphics yet!
Many EU countries already have the ugly pictures, they were asking for the images to be a mandatory 75% of the packaging, but I think it got voted down to 65% ???
Recent news, oct. 8 or thereabouts, regarding the European Parliament tobacco legislation is pretty odd, depending on the news source, it's either stricter regulations or watered-down and weaker ?!?!?!?
Here's the old FDA blurb...

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA), as amended by the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (FSPTCA), establishes a tobacco standard special rule for cigarettes that is effective on September 22, 2009. This special rule for cigarettes prohibits a cigarette or any of its component parts (including the tobacco, filter, or paper) from containing, as a constituent (including a smoke constituent) or additive, an artificial or natural flavor (other than tobacco or menthol) or an herb or spice, including strawberry, grape, orange, clove, cinnamon, pineapple, vanilla, coconut, licorice, cocoa, chocolate, cherry, or coffee, that is a characterizing flavor of the tobacco product or tobacco smoke. The issues identified in this guidance document represent those that we believe are frequently asked regarding the ban of cigarettes that contain certain characterizing flavors. In developing the guidance document, we carefully considered the relevant statutory criteria regarding the ban.
This ban has not as of yet affected pipe tobacco, nor cigars, only cigarettes...

Wow total facepalm on that one.
Soon 'Banada' aka Canada will follow suit. Next they will want to ban the letter 'L' and number 7 because it can be turned sideways and looks like a gun and might scare someone.

Friggin ridiculous!

Gaawwdddd this is government health systems getting out of control. Only person I have ever read about who died as a direct result of smoking cigars/pipes was Freud. And he was puffing about 20 Cubans a day. Wasn't there that paper by Penn State University which showed pipe smokers actually lived 2 years longer?
But if something like this happens I am going squat in the Peterson store, blow Irish Flake smoke in a politicians face and compose love poems to Rich at 4noggins to keep sending aros to Europe.

That pretty much hits the nail on the head. These nanny state legislators around the world have very very short memory's. Prohibition does not work, never has and never will. It creates organised crime and bootlegging. Prohibition turns normal working people into criminals because they refuse to give up their freedom of choice.

I have to admit to being heartened by the fact that Ireland - having a comparatively stringent governmental anti-tobacco policy - has so far exempted 'specialist' tobacconists from being obliged to shutter away their smoking products. The cigarettes and RYO toby in almost every other shop must be concealed from the public eye, but both Peterson's and Fox's are apparently allowed display their pipe tobaccos both in store and in the windows.

They are great historic parts of Dublin though. Telling them to cover up would be like changing the Molly Malone statue because it has the neck line of a hooker....god I love that statue. Surprised we haven't been hit by another general tobacco tax. Think it was a 50c hike to cigarette packs just.

Nope cigars and pipes seem to be the same still. Just demonizing the cigarette smokers into oblivion, then will be after us probably. :(

It’s a great idea if you’re a member of the handful of families who own and operate what we still refer to as the western world. But “continent-wide” is not enough...that’s why standardized policies of what they refer to as “governance” are transcontinental in implementation.

"We the People"..... allow & vote. Anything you don't like, next election..Change it. Otherwise, let the Gov. take care of you, because you don't know how. Now that I am on SS & Medicare, after I sell my business, might consider changing my party affiliation from independent to.. Doubt it.

On the bright side, at least the EU parliament had to deal with someone like Nigel Farage...we need more like him, imo.

I haven't seen this discussed in any media. Can you provide a link perhaps?
I don't honestly believe in this.
