Yesterday I made an impulse buy.

It was a last-second decision, and I didn't even research these things or the going prices --- I've been vaguely aware of such flintless lighters, but have never really seen them discussed with regard to pipes, it looks like to me they'd work great if the fuel doesn't taint the taste too much.

    Here's an Electomatch:

...but what I found was a Dorset version made in England, and after watching this video I said damn, that's cool as hell! and went ahead into the unknown and bought the thing...

...this morning I looked around a little more, it seems the swirl brown bakelite ones go for the most and prices vary pretty wildly, but overall they can be had for very cheap.

    Here's the one I got:

I can't wait to try it out, hopefully it won't be a disaster.

I had no idea such a thing even existed. Let us know how it goes because that thing is right up my alley. Looks like it would be great for sitting at home. Great find!

That is awesome. Looks like it would be ideal for lighting a pipe, easy to direct, small flame. Very, very cool.

    I remember those!

I'd get one but for the two year old grandson that is VERY curious about how things work.

Holy smokes, that is cool! Where do you get one of these? Is anyone making them new? If you don't mind me asking, what did that cost you?

No longer being made but you can find a few FleaBay.

Good God, I have not seen one of these in nearly 35 years! Along with these was the little pocket 'match' that you pulled out the striker--which had a wick on the end--and scratched it against the side of the housing (that also contained the lighter fluid).

These things were before the riot of butane thingies.

No reason that it should not work as well as a match or Zippo pipe lighter.

Well that's neat as heck. I saw this one and decided to take a risk... they said they don't know if it works, which isn't a great sign, but I can't imagine these are very complicated devices.

My Granddad used to have one that pulled out of a small world globe. I remember playing with it for hours as a kid. But, that was back before kids were stupid, ha ha!

I can only imagine they were discontinued in part due to safety... I'm just imagining the match piece falling out after it got bumped off a table, doesn't seem like it's held in in any way.

I'll see when it arrives. Nifty idea though.

I've wanted a Ronson Touch-Tip like this one ever since I saw The Maltese Falcon:

Neat buy. I remember seeing those as a kid in the 1950's. It's nice to see some survive today. Have fun with it, Troy.

Golly, haven't seen one of those in ages. Now I can see a real run on those still out there, it's now on my wish list.

I just picked up one of these off ebay as well. It even included the original instruction manual! I can't wait to see how it works and give it a try.

Think you can scan that manual to a file and email it? That'd be sweet!

A vote for old fashioned matches, for the sound of striking them, and for that soft, soft flame.

skapunk, I can do that once I get it. I'll post a link for you guys to download it. The electromatch is supposed to get here while I'm out of town, so it will probably be the end of next week before I can to it.

Well, mine got here and it works great, I love the heft that batteries add, mine takes 6 AA all together...

...however, the only fluid I had is Ronsonol and noticed it was somewhat stinky, is the Zippo fluid different in that is really "low odor" ???

    Anyway,
it's pretty damn fun having this thing around!

Got me some of the black can Zippo fluid,
to my nose & palate it is indeed better than the Ronsonol,
but I can still detect a tinge of the fluid flavor.

The way I got my wick trimmed at the moment gives about a 10 second burn until it goes out.

One reason I wanted this thing is for mid or deep bowl relights and for that purpose it works a charm.

I diggit it so much I'm looking for another one, but the DLI Flintless Flamingo as it is known, seems pretty scarce.

What say y'all about the Electro-Match?
