Here is an old kaywoodie meer that I have had posted on ebay for a while now. I thought I would take some better pictures to help it sell - you won't believe what happened next!

Talk about a kayWOODIE! Ooh that swirl! I have not seen a stem like this before. Is there a particular timeframe that they were used? What is it made of?

Yep, big 4 hole stinger.

My other kaywoodie meer stem looks more solid, like peanut brittle, not swirled like a marble.

Nice pipe Randeli. Right up my alley.
KW used bakelite, which they called Ambera, in the thirties. This looks like it.

Thanks, bigpond, maybe I am not seeing it clearly. I have never smoked it, or cleaned it, it sits the same as the day I got it off of ebay. I have thought about cleaning it up and sanding out some of the scratches but I dont want to ruin it...
Is there a good method to restore it? Maybe carve it up to hide the scratches?

Vegas Baby!!!
Randelli, why would you want to smooth out the scratches? Those scratches show that the pipe was smoked and used. But, it's your pipe, do what you will.

Randelli, I think you may find a nice fresh coat of carnauba may mitigate some of your concerns about surface scratches. You would have to sand a lot of material to address those dimples and some of the scratches on the bottom of the bowl are deep which may alter the shape if you aren't deadly careful.
It's nearly 90 years old. Those scars are hard won. Enjoy the heck out of what looks to be a very well broken in and pre-loved pipe. :puffpipe:
