I finished all my Christmas shopping and got everything ready for the holidays and found I had a few pounds left over from my budget. Well, you can guess what happened next!

I have been keeping an eye on a Dunhill Second for sometime. It was for sale from one of the smaller internet tobacconist here in the UK. I was worried that they would sell it before I had a chance to place an order. But today, I managed to bag it! Deep Joy!!

I was rather lucky with this one. The Good Lady Wife wanted a new camera for Christmas and I managed to find the model she was most interested in for half price in a limited time sale. It meant I could also get her a couple of accessories, tripod etc and stay on budget. I have had my eye on this pipe for over a month and was sure they would sell it before I had chance to order it myself.

The addition of the trade mark White Spot on the stem would make this pipe retail for a little over £200 or about $300. I am happy to do without that as it cost me £20 / $31. It is the closest I am going to get to owning a Dunhill this side of a lottery win!

White Spot or not I'm sure it's still a good smoker. Enjoy!

So now that your wife will be having a new camera w/ tripod we'll get to see a pic of you smoking this new pipe, right?

Is this a Parker? IMHO the best bang for the buck when it comes to pipes.

OTD - Yep, I'll get Mrs Withnail to take a pick of me smoking the new pipe once it gets here (or maybe the Northern Briar that she has got me for Christmas)

Tobakenist - I do normally favour straight pipes, but I find that aromatics smoke and taste better in a full bent. Plus I just couldn't pass this one up!

Bigvan - It is indeed a Parker, well spotted. I don't know if all their pipes are seconds, but of the three on the site I was looking at, this one said it was from the Dunhill factory, one other says hand made and nothing in particular is said about the third.

Thanks all for the posts, I am sure this little beauty will fit very nicely into my rotation!

Instead of calling it a Dunhill Second, you can tell people it's your Second, Dunhill.

Nice snag, second or not, I would like it in my collection.

Here's the link to the shop that sells them. http://bit.ly/vqINSZ As the credit card rules only stop the sale of tobacco products to USA, you could contact them to enquire about shipping costs if they are not available in America. There is an article about Parkers of London on Pipedia here - http://pipedia.org/index.php?title=Parker

Sa-Weeet! Very cool pipe. I really need to get a black dress pipe. They look so awesome. And that you got it for a mere $31 is fantastic! Good get!

Nice score! Thanks for the link as well. I'm sure that a Parker would be about as close as I'll ever be able to get to a true Dunhill.

Nice looking pipe. I may be mistaken but there a couple of brands that Dunhill uses to sell seconds. This is the link I am basing this off of. http://www.pipes.org/Articles/Seconds.html

I think i'vebeen looking at the same pipe at the same store (online) but in a dark brown smooth finish. Store located in Edinburgh. I've hesitated because of shipping (and out of funding )

"The fact is, squire, the moment a man takes to a pipe, he becomes a philosopher. It's the poor man's friend; it calms the mind, soothes the temper, and makes a man patient under difficulties. It has made more good men, good husbands, kind masters, indulgent fathers, than any other blessed thing on this universal earth."

    UPDATE

I was rather surprised this morning when the Post Woman knocked at the door and my new pipe arrived - along with a tin of Robert Lewis Wingfield Mixture!! I was surprised because, I ordered it yesterday morning, they didn't charge for shipping and it is 2 days before Christmas. With the volume of Christmas deliveries in the system I wasn't expecting it to show up until sometime next week. Not only was it excellent value, but they threw in the fold up stand that it is sat on in the picture on their site. You can't really ask for much better service than that.

As for the pipe itself (I'll post pic later) it feels really nice and balanced and sits very comfortably in the hand. I haven't had the chance to fire her up yet as the rain is coming down sideways outside and my usual smoking spot is really soaked. Looking at the pipe closely, I would guess that it became a second late in production when it was being rusticated. There is a bit of a pit on one side of the bowl as though the rustication process exposed a stone or similar in the wood. There is still plenty of thickness to the bowl as the pit is long and shallow rather than fatally deep. I must say, I'm very pleased!
