I'm sure many folks would have been proud of the fact that America took full control of military airbases....in the 1700's!!!!

Jay, maybe you missed it, or are in denial, but we took control of everything in the 1700’s.

Back when fighterplanes still carried muzzleloaders. Those were the days.

Just substitute “Hessian” for “Messerschmitt” next time. We’re good.

Yet another indicator how frail is the sense of history. Many or most college grads can't line up the sequence of any wars after the Civil War, if that. Placing air fields in the Revolutionary War should be a punchline to be immediately retracted amidst laughter, but not so much today. Apparently teachers are not assigning reading, and the textbooks are seriously deficient. If you read education curriculum texts at the college level, you begin to sense how deep the problems run.

Most of us Americans are ashamed of the buffoon currently in office, but lets not forget we won our independence from an absurd English king. At least we don't suffer the embarrassment of the English monarchy. Or, for that matter, the fiasco of "Brexit".

American airmen died in defense of your country. Show some respect.

How so true Tom, but the statement on my original post came from the 'genius' whose name must not be mentioned on this forum!I

PLEASE Alaskanpiper, let us not politicize this story...that's how threads get closed down. You're a newcomer here so perhaps you're not aware of the Forum rules?

"Or, for that matter, the fiasco of "Brexit"."

    Couldn't agree more Seldom

    Come on, man..............

But, yes, yet another hilarious flub by our esteemed leader. I don't think anyone is surprised anymore. In fact, most of the Weekend Update segments on Saturday Night Live these days are just clips of Trump speaking. They don't even have to write jokes about it, it's funny enough as is. Think whatever you please about his politics, but erudite public speaking is certainly not his strong suit, hahaha.

Point taken chum (and quite expected) but my response was to a comment on Brexit, hardly anything that concerns your average American. I never mentioned anyone by their personal name, though oddly you did then try to pass the buck to me.

A level playing field springs to mind.

hardly anything that concerns your average American.

It should. But maybe I am not your average American.

There have been quite a few moments when European/UK interaction ended up impacting the United States quite a bit. Some of them actually DID involve quite a few airfields, if memory of my shoddy american education serves me well...

I never mentioned anyone by their personal name, though oddly you did then try to pass the buck to me.

Yeah, I don't really care if you talk about politics or not, merely pointing out the blatant hypocrisy. Not meant as a slight toward you in any way, I just found it particularly funny. And you are correct, I did say his name, and although you didn't, I think we all know who you are talking about. I don't think the spirit of the rule is regarding a series of letters appearing on the forum in a correct order, it is to limit the occurrence of politically inclined thread topics ......such as this one..........that lead to conversations that have nothing to do with tobacco or pipes..........such as this one.......so I'll stop here.........hopefully

One model not on display in the case in Captain Picard's office, was of the Civil War incident, where they were showcasing the use of hot air balloons and signal flags over a battlefield to give the generals an idea what the enemy was up to. The balloon was tethered by the White House grounds, and its name was . . . "Enterprise."

Re-reading my post, let me write this. I came across too belligerent to our esteemed member from Cornwall, whose commentary I always enjoy. I apologize.
In spite of miserable leadership in the world, I've found people from all countries I've visited to be remarkably similar and pleasant. I'm American, love my country, but think the leadership doesn't measure up to the values and intellect of her people. I recognize that most countries suffer from this problem too.

Seldom, no problem, apology not required but duly accepted. I will say this that I was surprised to hear such from one whom I've always had good relations with and have respected on this forum. I almost sent a polite PM but feared stoking a hornet's nest so held back.

Anyway, all now water under the bridge so happy to move on

I'll kick an apology your way as well mawnansmiff, probably got a little more testy than I should have. I have some strong opinions about things and I can get a bit overzealous.

I am the CEO of an engineering firm here in Alaska and I have a new 2 month old baby at home, so I'm running on about 4 hours of sleep these days, which doesn't help me keep my attitude in check, haha.

Apologies for hijacking your thread a bit.

I have enjoyed talking beer and whiskey with you in your other thread. Cheers!

The man in your Avatar was quite keen on "political B.S." Well, the man the actor in your Avatar is playing anyway. Unfortunately he decided to leave this planet too soon. At least too soon for his fans like me (clearly not for himself). Can you imagine the writing he would be producing in today's political climate? I think I would die laughing....

OK, someone misread part of a speech on a telepromter, or no one carefully proofread the speech, is that the issue? And it gets blown up into some big deal? Is that what our UK freind is on about?

Not related to this incident in particular, but this is a lesson in public speaking. When you are using a text on the page, teleprompter, or even just generally memorized, you still have to listen to yourself. You're talking, the page or prompter isn't. So listen up, and if something foolish comes out, rephrase. This is also true speaking impromptu. Endeavor to have what you say be what you mean.

Well, to cut through the bullshit, the OP was a blatantly political poke at Donald Trump, and the whole “no names” nonsense is offensively disingenuous at best. So, since political threads seem to be allowed, let me say that having a President with balls, who actually represents the interests of the majority of his electorate is a most refreshing change, and it’s understood that any and all gaffes are to pounced on.
Carry on, Europe, you’re doing a wicked good job, we’ll be over (eventually) to save your asses again.

The thing about Trump is, no matter what negatives there may be about him, the vast array of (mostly) loathsome, putrid scum (in both the media and the government) that have arrayed themselves against him, continue to make him look good by comparison.

True. Lotsa politicians make bloopers on speeches. Oblahma made quite a few, but of course the media who worshipped him downplayed them.

I have no desire to act like a mod, I just have a desire to see this inevitably doomed thread, that is a prime example of why such rules exist, finally die.

For all I know the mods have seen it and let it continue. Their business is their own. They do a far better job than I ever could.

With that, I'm outta here. I have real life to attend to. Cheers.

Your post just happened to be the one that made this God-forsaken thread rise to the top of the forums again. It had nothing to do with the content of your post, other than the fact that it was in line with the content of the majority of this thread (political bickering).

I am European by birth, emigrated to the US and will hopefully obtain citizenship before 2020. If so, I fully intend to vote for President Trump. You may be surprised to know that is a common sentiment among quite a few of my fellow legal immigrants to this country.

In-flight smoking was prohibited before I ever had a chance to do it. Has anybody here ever smoked a pipe on an airplane? That must have been awesome.

Hhahahahaha, excellent reframe! I have been tempted to in the C-185, but it would require too much fiddling around with my hands, and I prefer to keep them on the controls as much as possible with all the traffic we have here. It would also be a little distracting in an emergency, and the thought of turbulence bouncing a cherry out of the bowl (or the pipe out of my mouth) and starting a full on cabin fire is not appealing. Not to mention the nic-hit from the hot box, hahaha.

Calling those who inherently oppose demagoguery, dictatorship, or a dubiously 'elected' President 'scum' is a tad over the top.
I live in an area populated by members of Confederate flag waving members of THE KKK and I abhor racism and the concept of eminent domain.
All men are created equal doesn't necessarily appear in 'the Bible', but, love thy neighbor, and thou shalt not kill do.
At the age of 71, I've been around long enough to know that the occupant is a fraud and a failure.
Capitalizing on failure has been his MO for decades and manipulation of 'celebrity' and 'media' and thus opinion, his patently obvious pony trick. Open y'er eyes and reject this out sized and destructive narcissistic 'personality'.
You may close this thread, my fellow pipe smoking moderators without the least bit of complaint from me.
ANYTHING that mentions politics in the pipe forum and gets away with it, deserves rebuttal on every side, thus opens itself to emotional rather than reasonable response.
I remember early on in the run up to Nov.2016, that GOP supporters were such because; 'he says what he thinks'. Well, frankly, what he thinks seems to be limited in scope and sustainable value to me.
I have attempted to keep emotion out of this response. Believe me, I will be happy when we have a NEW Executive Administration of Government in the US from the current self serving and blatantly criminal one we have installed at this time. One size fits all? Free speech? Free?
If you feel secure hiding behind a wall clutching your gun while you await the inevitable, you are not contributing to civilization, you're subsidizing its demise. Think man. In the end, if you don't accept gracefully, you will be fighting your own salvation. Amen. Existence is bigger than you, and yet, your own is your only yardstick. The reality is that there is more to existence than just YOU. Humility, compassion, empathy and reason can be compatible, and should be valued.

I've been trying to keep silent, but I can't. Way to go everyone! We've once again proven why... EXACTLY why political posts aren't allowed on the forum. Because this is the kind of BS that happens every... single... time... without fail.

It's pretty freaking simple: Obey the rules like a grown ass adult, don't post political threads, and we can all be happy and content talking about the two things we can all relate to. Pipes and tobacco. If you just can't help but want to post political threads, create your own forum where that's welcome. Many of us here know what happened the last time a pipe/politics forum was created. It was short lived.

Calling those who inherently oppose demagoguery, dictatorship, or a dubiously 'elected' President 'scum' is a tad over the top.

I don't consider them scum because they don't like the current occupant of the White House...I considered them scum long before DJT took office.

I just said they make him look good by comparison. But I do realize that's not saying much.

If you really think the political opponents of DJT in the media, government and silicon valley are in any way better than he his, then I don't think you're perceiving things accurately at all.

And if you think the previous occupant of the White House was any less a narcissist than the current one...again, your perceptions aren't very impressive.

I don't know what you are talking about anthony. I'm positive someone is going to win the other over in this thread and we will all leave in full agreement. That's what happens every time people talk politics.

I'm genuinely surprised this thread has lasted as long as it has. As Al says, I think this one has run its course.

I used to work at a bar where we had three topics that we were not allowed to discuss. Politics, religion, and other guys' wives. We've only covered politics here. Let's move on, shall we?

After living with my wife for 44 years, I'm not interested in other guy's problems.

Many or most college grads can't line up the sequence of any wars after the Civil War, if that.

I still don't get it. What was so civil about that war?

Since this thread is still around, let me preach one more time for encouraging your children, grandchildren, and next door neighbor to read and re-read history, to avoid speculating that Athen was defeated by Sparta for their failure to synchronize their quartz watches, or whatever silliness lack of historical sense perpetrates. Sure historians have their points of view, so read various ones. But don't let your kids and those you mentor go around not remembering which came first, the Korean War or the Civil War. Some haven't heard of either one and wouldn't know what you're talking about. In the U.S. read the U.S. Constitution and Federalist Papers every few years, and do what you can to see that we live up to those.
