I've used the same technique to remove oxidation from a tenon and works great. I've had the pin method for loose stems actually split several tenons but have used this technique with perfect results.

Thanks for creating those George. Getting the right tools is critical. I use the straight edges of a set of pin-punches, but that range is quite limited. Do you have list of the drill rod sizes you have in your set?
Knowing McMaster-Carr's way of stocking items, having the dimensions of mine wouldn't help you much.
Use the little selection boxes on the left side to find every step they carry between .120" and .160"
Ignore whether it's numbered, fractional or metric---doesn't matter. You just want the smallest increments you can get, in the least expensive metal. (Some of the specialized stuff is quite expensive, so watch prices. All you need are the ones that run about $2 each):
