I've been reading about all those different Virginias, red, yellow, golden, fire cured, etc...
it's getting a little confusing for me and I'd like to understand them a little more.

If I wanted to learn more about those, which blends would you recommend that would give me a better understanding of the different types of Virginias ?
Thanks.

For a pure red Virginia, McC's Red Cake or McCranies Red Ribbon.

For a golden, Klondike Gold.

Browns, SG Best Brown Flake

For an aged stoved Golden, McC's Aged Virginia 27

And, for a Malawi Fire Cured, blended, Dark Flake unscented.
Those are just my goto's
The heat that the. Irginia is cured with and time determines the color. 99% of all Virginias are of one's seed stock, Virginia Gold used mostly for cigarettes. But, the African or dark strains of Virginia are a bit different, and I am not 100% certain of their seed stock, but I am guessing that they are of the Dark Virginia seed stock. I grow Dark VA, which tastes similar. I am just not 100% that it is the exact same seed.

+1 on Cosmic's list

Most of those are the ones I'd recommend too - good taste Cosmic. Though I've never tried the Klondike Gold. I'll add for a plain sweet yellow, maybe a couple ounces of bulk blending yellow VA from P&C

If you REALLY want to understand Virginias go to Whole Leaf Tobacco and order a pound of Yellow, Lemon, Red and Fire Cured. Smoke each in your pipe. This will give you an understanding of what each unadulterated one tastes like. Then get the baccys Cosmic recommended and smoke them. Now you will have an understanding of what each variety tastes like and what the sauces/flavorings can do to the taste.

Whole leaf is a good suggestion. I think that after trying to smoke pure leaf, most understand why almost everyone cases their tobaccos. It is not a pleasant experience for me, throat charring, harsh, fast burning, and a general unpleasantness. I do smoke lugs and suckers from my garden tobaccos, but mostly to check the crop. It's not something that I would kick back on the porch and enjoy. YMMV
To me C&D and DR give us as close to unadulterated whole leaf as possible, but I still can't enjoy them. They just ruin my mouth and taste buds. My vote always goes to McClelland for being masters of Virginias and VaPers.

I was about to type a categorized list of representative Virginia blends, but then I noticed that you're located in Wuhan, China.

I don't believe there is a realistic chance that you'll be buying anything on a list that I write-up.

Forget about accessibility, postage and tariffs make it totally impractical.

as far as I'm informed, the chinese do smoke the english type virginan ones ,yes and primarly they do grow virginia leaf

and as to southern European domestic pipetobaccos-yes they are mostly their own Kentucky type tobacco a little bit harsh and usually high in nicotine, something close to belgian Semois but stronger and harsher, ribbon cut

I'll second Cosmic on this one. Read up on Virginia leaf by studying the McClellands listing at online retailers. This will give you a grasp of the various Virginia blends, with a number of them just being various types of Virginia leaf, or single-leaf. McClellands 5100 Virginia red is a good introduction, although the fragrance out of the bag is pretty much like ketchup -- ignore it, light up and enjoy. But Virginias are a study in nuance and subtlety, sort of like a birder learning the warblers, many looking quite similar, but so much variation once you get the hang of them. After you have tried and enjoyed every other genre of leaf and blends, there are the Virginias to ruminate for years to come.

Thanks for the lists and recommendations. Those will be very helpful.

If all these are purchasable from one single shop, it's doable, but if not, then indeed, it becomes a hassle to gather the ingredients. However, I'd still love to have that list. I might move back home at some point.

Does China have its own pipe tobaccos? I know that Spain, Portugal, and Italy have a few that we have no access to, but they sort of suck.

I believe that China is the world's largest producer of tobacco. Whether for the pipe or other, I dunno.
yes China produces a lot of tobacco. But so far, I have never heard of pipe tobaccos in any of the shops I've been to... any of the 2 shops I've been to. :-D I checked with my online tobacco dealer in China, he doesn't know of any.

That is too bad. But, I know that I have seen many pictures of Chinese and other Asians (occidentals?) smoking pipes. Some look like business men, which probably order online. And, I've also seen working class men with pipes, who must be getting something local. Or, is that presumptuous of me to assume that they aren't ordering online?

I assume they do the same as I do, order online. There are a few online private businesses that found ways to get blends China side then just send by national courrier.

Online shops are thriving here. Pipe tobacco is very expensive for the regular Joe here. A pack of smokes can be as cheap as $1.5 so paying a 50g tin of pipe tobacco for $13... Lots of people just don't see it.

I do have one or two acquaintances that smoke the pipe, but they aren't middle class. No way. PIpe smoking is a way to show off wealth for most people that do smoke the pipe.

There is a social app here called "Wechat", bit like Viber or Whatsapp I guess.

You can chat wth friends, create groups, public pages, things like that.

One of the online pipe tobacco seller set up a group for her customers. 350 people last time I checked. Those guys are nice, joke around, talk a lot about pipes obviously. But they do talk a lot about the last/car/golden ring they bought, the last high end escort girl they (hum) ... pictures of the panel of girls they chose from, obviously in a very expensive suite. All very ostentatious. At some point, some of those guys posted videos of their last night with said charming women. The feeling is very very very different from the vibe that I get from this forum here.
Because the pipe smoking thing here is for most not a hobby, just a club of rich people showing to each other that they can afford it.

One more thing, the import of tobacco, as a business, is illegal here in China.

One can import for personal consumption, but not for selling. Chinese tobacco only is sold to Chinese people.

carver, I'm located in China too. Just a trip up the Yangtze river to Chongqing. I've been here for around 7 years. We've got a descent group of pipe smokers over here that get together about once a month. You can look me up on wechat, kamkiel, but just make sure to leave an identifiable note on the invite. I'm always declining random invites from strangers trying to add me on wechat.

13$ for 50 grams is pretty reasonable, in Canada you're looking at 35-40$ for 50 grams. 13$ is still cheaper than most american B&M's, and not much more than ordering online.

@Kiel : great news, I've been looking for smoking buddies here in the Middle Kingdom but mostly to no avail so far. If I'd speak better Chinese, I'd definitely be able to make more smoking friends. Invite sent ;-)
@Andy: indeed it's not that crazy expensive when you earn a decent salary, but the majority of people here earn $700/month. Pipe tobacco, knowing that one might want to buy a variety of them and several pipes...

Where does Samuel Gawith's Full Virginia Flake fall on Cosmic's list? I just tried some and really enjoyed it. I've only smoked (and enjoyed) Englishes up to this point and have been hesitant to try anything new. But I'm curious in trying some other VAs now.
