I saw that, too. That is a really nice pipe. You'd think they could have gotten a bigger splinter from the boat, though.

Supposedly all of the pieces used came from a single chair.

The seller of that pipe, Chance Whittamore (“great-estate-pipes”), does an unbelievably great job refurbishing pipes. So good, that there have been allegations that people have bought pipes from him as estates and resold them as unsmoked. As a result, his pipes always fetch top dollar on eBay, but are probably worth the extra money.

Chance sands the chamber to bare wood, then applies a bowl coating, so if you don’t like bowl coatings, don’t buy a pipe from him. I’m agnostic on the topic of bowl coatings, but generally prefer uncoated. That said, I haven’t had a problem with the coating that he applies.

Dunhill does a great job with the presentation of themed pipes, and this one is no exception. They're even gone to the trouble of reproducing a typical average pipe of the period, one with almost no discernible character, devoid of any beauty whatsoever, nearly grainless and somewhat mottled. The reliquary will make a most excellent cat toy. But the box is excellent, and the only part of this worth parting with a farthing.

I agree. The tamper is possessed.

The tamper interests me, as well.

    The pipe doesn't.
