...stumbled over an old stack of mags this afternoon and decided to take some rapidfire quick shots --- these images are by no means archival quality, most are poorly lit or blurry --- was just gonna snap a few but got a little carried away as usual...
The images are totally haphazard and not in any order whatsoever, this assembly was sort of a quickie --- wysiwyg
Hopefully one day I will be able to present these things in a proper format, I am working toward a project, but it's been long going, and I'm still gathering up old copies --- I'm a bit of a completist in this regard, I like to see everything !!!
Anyway,

it's fun rumbling thru the dust.
Pages away!

Notice all the photos of the guys with pipes in their clench are actual. Unlike the photo-shopped pipe in the Sutliffe Molto Dolce ads. Shame on you Sutliff.

:)
I particularly liked the Foursome copy:

"It leads your fancies into sun-lit glades, where its aroma suggests incense kindled by nimble wood sprites on fairyland altars.

Foursome is magic passport to happiness and pleasure."
There's currently a tin of it in the Old Belt version up on the bay, it's a tin with cross appeal due to the golf and they actually use real names, the only one I know is Vardon...it's a beautiful tin:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-CIGARETTE-TOBACCO-TIN-FOURSOME-OLD-BELT-GLENEAGLES-GOLF-wear-used-/151939633231?hash=item23604ed04f:g:~QUAAOSwX~dWi78T
Another interesting thing is the Carreras ad for Baron's cartridge case -- the cartridges were popular for a certain period but they never really took off due to all the differing pipe bowl sizes y'know.
I think Dunhill sold 'em by group number so'd you'd know it'd be a good fit, but otherwise they're just another one of those many curious curiosities and have been largely forgotten about.
They must've been expensive to manufacture too.
Also there's the Toogood pipe imbued with "pine tar essence", not sure I'd like that! :?:
And I enjoyed the 4Square ad with "pukka gen" because I'm a sucker for slang, that phrase means "accurate information of any kind" and was known to be used by the RAF:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_slang
Gen -

reliable information. According to Squadron Leader Ward-Jackson, who wrote a book on RAF slang, it likely comes from the stamp "For General Information" applied to official documents. Pukka Gen is "the real gen", coming from the Hindustani word "pakka", meaning substantial.
- Iain Lawrence
There is also a Coca Cola ad with that phrase, from 1944:

-- click here for the link --

They translate it as "swell info".
The word pukka is still in general use and a part of popular culture.
Oxford has a nice write up here:

http://blog.oxforddictionaries.com/2013/06/pukka/

In for a penny,

in for a pound.
Might as well go ahead and round this out a bit, most of the images below were downloaded off the internet and have been posted in various threads...

Amazing history. Wonder what it was like to live in a world where many people smoked pipes.
These texts are also a lot brainier than ad copy today -- for people who enjoyed reading, one might think.
