I love looking through the Japanese enthusiast sites,

they usually take comprehensive pictures and offer much detail,

and they love the British stuff!

Wow, over 20!
I have eight, if you count my 9676 Colossus variation. Mine are all British, I've never been able to seal the deal on a French-made 9438

Thanks for sharing your collection,

And I think the Tapestry is grand too!

Wow, Al, that is a beautiful collection! I might need to add some GBD's to the collection.
@MLC - I love Japanese sites! One of my favorites is:
http://yeoldebriars.com/
The scholarship is generally excellent as are the illustrations. Jon Guss' excellent article on Barlings in the vintages section of the "A Passion For Pipes" site kicks its ass, as does my Barling article in Pipedia. But overall this is one of the best sites on the Net.
If you don't read Japanese you can use Google translate, which will offer up often unintentionally hilarious results.

No doubt!
I love the YOB site too, and often get lost looking thru the links as well.
I enjoy looking at the PipeVillage too,

neat stuff,

here talking about fake Dunhills...

Thanks guys. There is something about the bowl size on the 9438 that makes them such great smokers. It is very large, for the overall size of the pipe (most weight around 50 grams). It is interesting to note the many stem and tenon variations of each model, none are exactly alike.

I love this shape more and more every time I see it. However, for some reason I much prefer the look of the tapered stem over the saddle bit. It just looks more fluid to me. Now, don't get me wrong, this shape with a saddle bit still looks marvellous, but it just doesn't call to me nearly as loudly as one with a tapered stem.

A tapered stem is definitely my preference (vs saddle) on any pipe. But the tapered stem on this pipe changes it from a 9438 to a 9242. Probably a hundred or so 9438's are on Ebay annually, and in the $75-$100 range. The 9242 is seen about one every 18 months and even poor examples start at $300 and then go up. It's in a similar class as the Comoys 499 and Sasieni Ashford (which come in saddle "S" stem or taper).

Interesting Al. Why so few with tapered bits? Are we the only ones who like them. You would think if they sold they would have made a lot more.

I've wondered that myself. Since there are far more 9438's out in the estate world than 9242, I gather that the tapered stem 9438 was the better selling model. GLP and Neil Archer Roan gave some love to the 9242 and it has since shot to cult-like status. GBD is selling new pipes these days (decent pipe and price point). Why they don't make a 9242 is beyond me.
Here's a shot of some of GLP's pipes:

Digby makes a 9242-like shape, I had this LW2389. It was an older model, and had the round orifice like button that didn't work for me. Les Trout now owns it. There is a Digby for sale on Ebay now.
