My wife, who does not appreciate my smoking btw, popped into a little antique shop next to her favorite furniture store. She was thoughtful and sent me a photo of some old pipes. Fast forward to last night and she brought me home this kaywoodie 5129 for $10!

The tiny bowl is perfect for a short morning smoke. I will have to clean it up and try it out!

Cool, good eye, a 4-digit KW is a good thing. Is the stinger ball still intact? (that will help you narrow down the year of manufacture)

4 hole small ball with DRINKLESS on the stem. Still too dirty to see much more than that.

Now the question is, what is she guilty about to have bought you a pipe?

Well, I told her what a good deal it was, how much they sell for on ebay, and it could be a quick flip. But now I want to keep it.
Am I a bad person??

Very nice find.

I love old Kaywoodies, probably have about 20 ATM.

Even with the stinger most of mine are excellent smokers.

I have quite a few kaywoodies myself. I am kinda afraid to count them, because in so doing I would cross over from blissful ignorance to willful understanding. I feel like Steve Martin in the Jerk: "all I need is this zulu and bent billard, thats all I need, thats it........ and this bulldog".
Besides the Hi-Bowls I am collecting, this Super Grain is the only one that one can reasonably place in a specific time frame - somewhere between 1931 and 1938. I don't remember when they moved the logo from the shank to the stem but maybe 1935. Does someone have better information?

I'm not a resto guy, but from what I've seen on Forums, this one should clean up like a champ. Go cautiously if you're not experienced with a reamer.

Your Kaywoodie looks to have been favored by its previous keeper, so my guess is that you will find it to be a solid smoker. Kudos to your Missus for finding and purchasing it for you, too!
Chris Keene (of pipepages.com renown) provides an on-line guide (created by Robert W. Stokes, PhD) to Kaywoodie pipes which may be accessed here (Collector's Guide to Kaywoodie Pipes). I hope that the information contained therein will help you in learning more about this particular pipe.

I haven't had time to clean it up yet, life and all. I did try to light it after a quick whiskey bath - man that stem was bitter! I am a bit leary about working on the stem as the logo is raised and I dont want to damage it, or knock it loose. This one might need to visit one of our restorers...

Well I worked on the pipe a bit. It looks better; but not as good as I was hoping for. I don't have a reamer, obsidian oil, or a buffer - but I think it looks great for its age.
