My Dad told me a funny story about my Uncle Frank the other day.

Uncle Frank was not one for doctors or check-ups ... just hard work and living right.

However, when he turned 80, Aunt Jacobine put her foot down and demanded he at least get a check-up.

So, reluctantly, he made an appointment for the next day.

After the usual poking, prodding, blood tests, etc., he was given a clean bill of health.

The doctor actually thought Frank was in his late 60's until he asked.

Before leaving, Uncle Frank said, "Well go ahead and get it over with"!

The doctor, quite confused, said, "Get what over with?"?

"You're going to tell me to quit smoking", Frank replied.

"I didn't even know you smoked!", exclaimed the doctor.

"Yep, been smoking a pipe for 73 years ... started at the age of seven".

"Well, my advice to you is to NOT quit smoking ... that would be the worst thing you could do at this point"!

Uncle Frank went home quite pleased with himself and continued smoking another eight years.

I'll never forget that man and his influence on me! :puffy:

My Grandmother who smoked cigars in a pipe all her life was asked at 92 years of age what she wanted for her Birthday, her answer , A new shovel I wore my old one out sharpening it. She died at 97, still feeding chickens, growing Mums, she was one of a kind.

It's quite clear to me that pipe smoking does a person no harm, and it in no way shortens a persons life.I have never seen anything that says it does either of the above. My feeling is that it helps me relax, and relieve stress, and that's a good thing..I say good for the doctor who told your Uncle Frank not to quit.

Joke time and an apology beforehand:
This old farmer was 80-some yrs old and had worked hard all his life. He hadn't been to a doctor in 35 yrs or more. His wife was starting to worry a little bit in spite of the fact the only thing apparently wrong was that his hearing wasn't so good anymore. She begged & begged him to go for a check up and he finally relented and told her to set it up.
The day finally came for his appointment and she went with him because of his bad hearing. When his turn came the nurse put them both in the examination room together and told them the doctor would be in shortly. After the nurse closed the door and left the old farmer asked his wife,
"Whad she say?"
"The doctor will be in, in a minute," his wife replied.
Sure enough a couple of minutes went by, the door opened and the doctor stuck his head in,
"Hi folks! I'm Dr. Smith and I'll be doing your physical today. I'll be right back, but to get started I'm going to need a urine sample, a stool sample, and a semen sample for the lab."
The doctor then closed the door and went his way on down the hall. As soon as the door closed the old farmer asked his wife,
"Whad he say?"
"He said he's gonna need your shorts," she replied!
(Ta-da! I'll be here all week folks. Don't forget to tip the wait staff!)

What a great story []

I wonder what blend he smoked
Thanks Teddy! Uncle Frank smoked Prince Albert, Half & Half, Carter Hall and Walnut.
Perhaps there is a reason I enjoy these blends still today. :)

my father smoked a pipe for well over 60 years...he had but 3 pipes, a billiard, a bent billiard and a bulldog...am sure they were all dr. grabows...in memories, I can still that 3 pipe rack on his night table, along with assorted pouches of carter hall, half/half and swr.
with his heart failing him as he approached his 80th year, he spent most of his last month in an icu unit...I walked into his room one of those last days with the heart specialist at the foot of his bed, explaining in great detail just what was going on inside my father's heart...having a captive audience (my father had quite a few tubes and monitors hanging from quite a few places), the doctor's explanation went on and on and on.
finally, my father motioned to the doctor for a pencil and pad (he couldn't speak for the tube running down his throat)...the doctor look puzzled, but did as my father requested...after a few scribbles, the doctor took the note, read it and looked straight at the tv hanging from the ceiling...with the doctor still scratching his head, I picked up the note and read it.
"change channel to 22" was all the note said.
here's to all the uncle franks and codger pops in all our memories.

My great-uncle Charlie was much the same. Pharmacist, bootlegger, heavy pipe smoker and all-around good guy. Lived to 93 and always had a good thing to say about people. That kind of person has a very positive effect on others. If I don't end up being a crotchety old fart (likely) I would certainly like to be like him.
