Hello all. Yesturday, I was very fortunate to have been gifted 8 Estate Pipes from an old neighbour. I recenly saw my old neighbour from my old neighbourhood that I grew up in. I remembered her husband (RIP, passed away 2 years ago) always had a pipe going, day and night. When we were kids, we could smell that pipe on the street and it smelled so good. I stopped her the other day on the street and asked what type of tobacco her husband smoked. Without a pause, she said "Erinmore, he always smoked Erinmore". We then caught up a bit and I advised her that I had taken up the pleasure of pipe smoking. Without hesitation, she said, "stop by the house, you can have his pipes, I have no use for them now and I didn't know what to do with them." I have attached the pics. They are in desperate need of attention, which I will enjoy bringing them back to life. I figured I would show you the before photo's and then the after photo's, which I'm sure will take me quite a while due to my busy work schedule. This is what I could find on them. All but one have markings of some sort. I'm not sure what the one is without markings, could be a basket pipe for all I know. I have printed off some re-furbashing points about pipes and oxidation, oxyclean, salt and alcohol treatment, etc..but anything else you can tell me, including info on these pipes would be greatly appreciated. One of them is a Danmore of Denmark, huge pipe. Another one is a Stanwell Bulldog style but with such faded wording, I can't tell what model? Any tips for cleaning these up would be awesome and if you know ages of some of these perhaps? They could be anywhere from 40 years to current, he always had a pipe for over 30 years that I know of.. Enjoy.

In the order of photo's, they are

    Stanwell Sterling 75
    Danmore of Denmark
    Stanwell Majectic 32
    Stanwell Royal Briar 75M
    Brigham 509
    Stanwell Bulldog?
    Stanwell 169
    Peterson Delux 12 1/2 S

    And the unknown

I also received this humidor and pipe rack.

Nice little collection. Good luck with them. Just make sure you mask the stems when you polish the silver bands.

Can't help you with the dating though. Looks like he was a stanwell guy.

    Good luck

All of them look great. A good cleaning is all I see that they need.

If you can't pack it, light it, and smoke it then why do it. It's a dieing art that must be rekindled in all of us as fortold by our forefathers.

Handsome group there. At first glance it looks as though they should all clean up nicely.

Thanks everyone, I will certainly enjoy cleaning them up. Just wondering, I notice that many times, people on this forum will reply to someones statement showing it above their reply. Is there something you have to click, or do you just highlight the part you want to reply to and then copy and paste it?

Sad news about your neighbor's husband. Damn nice of her to gift those pipes to you!

Some of those stems look like a pitbull had their way with them. Nasty lookin.

Nice pipes you got. They do need some TLC, but I'm sure they will clean up fine. Good luck cleaning them. That was really nice of her to give you those pipes, How old are they? I'm in the process of tracking down my grandfathers pipes. He died almost 30 years ago, so all his pipes are at least that old

As long as I got a pipe full of baccy and a nose full of snuff, I'm a happy camper

Those are some great looking pipes. You should have a lot of fun fixing those up. I spent my whole holiday season fixing up some estate pipes and I had a great time.

@uberam3rica I currently am doing the same thing. Someone in the family (hopefully) has my grandfathers old pipes. I dont even ever remember him smoking a pipe, but my mom and all of her siblings remember it. They are pretty sure someone has them, its just about finding out who. Good luck to you though

Your neighbor had fine taste in pipes and tobacco.
Every one of them is a really good pipe.
As mentioned, they should all clean up pretty well except for some serious tooth gouges I see in a few of them.
Its hard to tell, but I've seen pipes that old timers actually filed tooth marks into to make it more confortable to hold. One or two of them look like this might be the case ?
I bought a collection once where every pipe had a long gouge filed in the stem just past the button, and they were actually really comfortable to clench.

That is a fine gaggle of pipes you have there .

There is just something special when pipes are passed on from one person to the next. It speaks volumes about the generosity and continuity of our little brother(and sister)hood. You now get to add your enjoyment to the enjoyment this gentleman experienced in the past. Maybe one day you could invite this lovely woman over for a cup of tea and fire up a Stanwell with some Erinmore in it and spark a memory for her.

Thats a good bunch of pipes. The first Stanny is lovely. Does the last pipe have an oval shank, or round? Emil and Jess Chonowitsch were doing some funky stuff with oval shapes in the sixties, are you sure there's no markings?

The only thing I see is "sterling silver" on the band , so faded, I could barely make it out. It is an oval shank.

Smokenscotch nice collection. Judging by the other restores done by members I've seen your pipes will be beautiful when cleaned up.

I have a similar story to yours about growing up in my neighborhood except this neighbor smoked cigars. In the summers I spent time with my grandpa in his paint shop behind his house where he hand lettered signs. This gentleman always showed up in his pressed whites and khaki pants and always smoking a cigar. He lived the next street over and would walk back the alley to my grandpa's shop. Of course he passed away many years ago but the scent of a cigar always brings back those memories from my childhood.

Well it's been a month now at least one of them must be ready for display?
