Cool video thank you for finding it. I'm always amazed when I see old factories like that with all the exposed belts and lack of guarding on the saw blades.

Thanks briarfriar, very informative. I had 3 Charatans as a teenager 55 years ago. They were beautiful pipes but the taste was poor. According to the video they did not stain and wax, but used linseed oil. That is a drying oil that forms a somewhat hard surface. It is not porous as far as I know. The linseed oil may have been the cause of the not so great taste problem.

While watching that film, I was struck with how pipe making is done essentially the same in videos I've seen of the Chacom factory in action. Go with what works!
