Every time I read someone's list I think, "Oh yeah, I should have put that on my list too!"
I tend to like war movies because they show ordinary people rising to meet extraordinary situations. Also, I'm just interested in history, particularly combat aviation.

I really like a lot of movies.....my favorite genre would be sci-fi/fantasy that have a thinking message. I also like war/historical pictures. Marvel's Avengers, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, X-Men, Spiderman as well as DC's Batman, Man of Steel are all favs. Clint's Dirty Harry series also - but none would make my top five.

Well here goes:

1) The Matrix

2) It's a Wonderful Life

3) The Day the Earth Stood Still (Both Versions)

4) Patton

5) War of the Worlds (Original & 1995)

Also runner up votes for the Lion in Winter ( " My God, if I went up in flames there's not a living soul who'd pee on me to put the fire out!" "Let's strike a flint and see"), Dr. Zhivago, Zulu, LA Confidential, Legends of the fall.......really just five?!?!? Seriously

This list is impossible... I guess I'll just list the movies that I for some reason watch every time I see them on TV even though I've seen them all at least 20 times:
The Shawshank Redemption
The Green Mile
Tombstone
The Godfather Part 2
The Patriot
If I could do a top 5 Westerns, Dramas, Comedies etc. I might have better luck. I'm not even sure that these are my all time favorites; I just knowv that I have seen them the most.

I do like Kelly's Heroes, Airplane 1 and Band of Brothers, TV though it may be. Oh, and the Sean Connery James Bonds. Terminator 2 was a total surprise for not sucking.

"The Postman" is one I didn't see posted yet, but might have scrolled past.

"Dances with Wolves" needs to be included.

"Any Which Way but Loose and Can" Right Turn Clide

Time Bandits - Its a good one of Wally.

Caddy Shack - What is this, buy a hat get a free bowl of soup?

The Outlaw Josey Wales - Dying ain't much of a living, boy. Or is that Pale Rider?

Willy Wonka - We are the music makers, we are the dreamers of dreams.
I was 10 when Star Wars came out, so enough said.
Honorable mention to Inglourious Basterds (Quentin)

Five of my favorites would include:
Vertigo (damn near perfect)

Reservoir Dogs (the soundtrack alone makes it a classic)

The Empire Strikes Back ties with Raiders of the Lost Ark (both for the sentimental reason that they were pure magic to a kid)

Jaws (the perfect summer blockbuster?)

Planes, Trains and Automobiles (barely a good movie, but it makes me howl - still)
All five could have been Hitchcock, but that's no fun.

Terrific choices so far. Some films, like Lonesome Dove, The Seven Samurai, and Best Years Of Our Lives, get mentioned by a number of responders.
What is interesting to me is the absence of some films that are considered legendary. One that comes to mind is Gone With The Wind. It's not on anyone's list.
