King of Hearts

The Seven Samarai

To Kill a Mockingbird
Tough to list just 5, but these had the most profound impact on me as a kid.
PS it was very difficult not to include, "The Great Santini" or "Midnight Express". Both of which shocked me as a child.

1. Barry Lyndon

2. LotR (trilogy) Haven't seen Hobbit movies

3. 12 O'clock High

4. The Battle of Britain

5. Tora Tora Tora!

You got a fine collection there!
Mine are:

1. The Battle of Britain

2. Zulu

3. Das Boot

4. Kelly's Heroes

5. Where Eagles Dare
Along with all the other classics like Easy Rider and Dr strangelove, but I'm just a sucker for a good war film. Preferably with Clint Eastwood, Richard Burton, Jurgen Prochnow or Michael Caine in it.

As others said, can’t really narrow it to 5. But the first 5 that come to mind at the moment are:
2001 A Space Odyssey

Chinatown

Network

No Country For Old Men

Waking Life
And suddenly an alternate list of 5 emerges:
JFK

Inception

Donnie Darko (Director’s Cut)

Dr. Strangelove

One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest
And another bonus vote for Children Of Men

"Where Eagles Dare" meets that definition perfectly ... if you haven't seen it, you owe it to yourself to do so.

Well this list could change on a daily basis as I have time to sit and think about it. So here goes 5 of my favorites.

Christmas Vacation

First Blood

The Rope

Goodwill Hunting

Taxi Driver
I know this isn't a movie but a mini series, Band of Brothers is an all time favorite and I seem to stop on it whenever I see it on.
This is really impossible I would need to do at least my top 50 if not 100.

I am totally blown away by how eclectic most of the lists are. I thought that people would be more into one or two genres at most.
Zulu! Michael Caine finally gets noticed. What a great movie. This is the problem with getting old and then trying to make a list of anything. If I had watched Zulu in last month or so I suspect Electra Glide in Blue wouldn't have made my top 5.

Can't promise they won't change tomorrow.

The Horse's Mouth with Alec Guinness

Seventh Seal

Santa Sangre by Alejandro Jodorowski

Deep Throat

Window Water Baby Moving by Stan Brakhage

Except the first choice, which appeals to me and few others, these are some of the most innovative films that have been made. No history of Cinema that does not mention them all is authoritative.
