I have several to start:
Dream Park by Larry Niven and Steven Barnes, Ringworld by Larry Niven, the Fafhrd and Gray Mouser stories by Fritz Leiber.
I once pitched Dream Park when I was at Disney, working on TRON. Their response: We don't make movies about murders in theme parks.

The Dune miniseries was ok, but that novel deserves a big-budget blockbuster motion picture.

Death Gate Cycle by Tracy Hickman an Margaret Weis.
I loved the concept of two opposing characters so different in culture yet so much the Same.
One group of people used Magic by the act of creating tattoos on thier body to guard against the prison made for them by the people who sang and danced incantations as a way of magic.
Both ideas were beautifully orchestrated in the end.
A real thought provoking series for me as a young man to first attempt to observe, and second to react.

As a kid I always wished The Shannara books by Terry Brooks were put into film. Not the newest once but The Sword Of Shannara, and the following 7 could work pretty well.

The Thrawn Trilogy.

I actually haven't read them yet, but apparently they were widely considered a worthy successor to the story of the movie trilogy.

Far from prefect, but doing the story justice (again, that's just the impression I get from reviews).

...and although I suspect the PKD catalog will be harvested much more,

I'd love to see cinematic adaptations of:

It's hard to believe that Tristram Shandy could be made into a film, but it was, and it's a pretty damn good flick too!

My vote would have to be for The Chronicles of Amber.

I remember the 1984 David Lynch version of Dune. It was OK but strayed from the book. The SyFy mini series was better. I too would like to see it done again.

Ringworld by Larry Niven
I have always enjoyed Niven's books & have been fascinated with Ringworld. With all the current day plans for space elevators & cosmic megastructures I have wondered how he came up with the idea back in 1970 or before, unless he had insider contacts giving him info & ideas.

Big +1 on that. By coincidence I just stumbled on this today...I had no idea they were making it...an "original Amazon series" of PKD's The Man in the High Castle. Apparently coming out next month.

sable: you worked on Tron? :worship:
+1 for another Dune movie. I actually like Lynch's version (unlike many Dune fans), but I'd to see a movie closer to the book.
I'd very much like to see The Forever War turned into a movie, and googling it now shows that it might actually happen!
Apart from that, something from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series (perhaps Small Gods, though that might be hard to translate to the screen).
Nice thread ;)

If graphic novels are included, then Hack/Slash (Cassie Hack is awesome) and Neil Gaiman's Sandman Chronicles (NEEDS a HBO series treatment)

I would love to see a better version of the Hobbit and a bridge movie covering the time from the end of the Hobbit up to the beginning of Lord of the Rings. Would even like a remake of both the Hobbit and LOTR that are true to the originals and a bridge movie. Give it 10 to 20 years and it may happen.
